Free to allow customers to adjust Google ad blocker

2013-01-07 09:36:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Having shot across Google's bow on 4 January by installing ad blocking software on subscribers' Freebox Revolution STBs to block Google Adwords and Adsense-served ads, French ISP Free says it will drop the software's default status this week, reports Les Echos. The move follows criticism from French online news publishers' association Spiil, which feels that no ISP has the right to decide what citizens can or cannot access on the internet, including ads. Digital economy minister Fleur Pellerin will meet both parties on 7 January, and telecom regulator Arcep expects precisions from Free in the middle of the week concerning why and how it is blocking ads.
