Interests in the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the progress of Hector. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 200 AM PDT (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 14.4 North, longitude 135.7 West. Hector is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next few days with a slight increase in forward speed. On the forecast track, Hector will cross into the central Pacific basin Sunday night or early Monday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher gusts. Hector is a strong category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Slow weakening is forecast during the next few days. However, Hector is expected to still be a major hurricane when it moves into the central Pacific basin. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 957 mb (28.26 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- None.
