Post Internal Research Fellow PostDoc on EO Agriculture This post is classified F2. Location ESRIN, Frascati, Italy Our team and mission The postholder will report to the Head of the Applications Section in the Data Applications Division within the Science, Applications and Climate Department of the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. In the execution of the tasks, the postholder will work in close cooperation with other staff of the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. The Data Applications Division is a dynamic team leading research and innovation activities, in partnership with European and international industry and academia, aiming at advancing science, developing novel applications, supporting industry growth and contributing to establish an European ecosystem of exploitation platforms to maximize the impact of European missions in society. In the coming year activities in the area of applications will focus particularly on exploitation of data from the existing Sentinel missions as well as the preparation of the Copernicus evolution. Overview of the field of activity proposed Global food production must double by 2050 to meet the increasing nutritional demand of the growing world population. In parallel 70 of available freshwater is globally consumed by agriculture, in particular for crop irrigation. Consequently the geographical and temporal variability of water availability is increasingly becoming a limiting factor for agricultural productivity and with this a driver for food security. As part of the Copernicus evolution the high spatiotemporal Land Surface Temperature Monitoring LSTM mission is proposed to provide dynamic information on water use and productivity at field scales relevant for agricultural management. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the ESA website www.esa.int Fields of activitiesresearch The successful candidate will, in this context, conduct research in the following domains Investigate requirements for thermal EO observations for agricultural monitoring in the frame of the LSTM mission preparation Develop and validate evapotranspiration EO products at field scale resolution Demonstrate the use of Sentinel1, 2 and 3 observations for agricultural monitoring, in particular for yield estimation Participate in the development of products and applications related to EO for food security and water productivity in developing countries. In addition the candidate will also Liaise with project teams and endusers of relevant ESA RD projects Contribute to the scientific exploitation of the campaign data sets for the LSTM mission Contribute to preparation of training materials, training events, and workshops, some of which may be held in Africa Publish results in relevant scientific journals and present at relevant ESA conferences and workshops. The position requires also stateofart knowledge on analysis and processing methods for data from missions such as Sentinel1, Sentinel2 and Sentinel3. Applicants should have good analytical and communication skills and should be able to work autonomously in a multicultural team environment. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
