The Astrophysics progamme, through the Aspasia program and together with the NOVA school, offer a PhD position in the area of Xray highresolution spectroscopy and timing of Active Galactic Nuclei AGN under the supervision of Dr. Elisa Costantini SRON and Dr. Phil Uttley UvA. The project will be carried out mostly at the SRON location Utrecht with frequent visits at University of Amsterdam. PhD student fm vacancy number SRON1437 Project Outline The project is observational in nature. The successful applicant will study Active Galactic Nuclei ionised outflows under different observational conditions, investigating the energetics and geometry of this complex medium. Timing and spectroscopy will be jointly used to study both the ejection and accretion mechanisms in the AGN. She will make use of archival data from the Chandra, XMMNewton and Hubble Space telescope satellites. Requirements Candidates should have a masters degree in Astronomy or Physics. Candidates with previous experience in XrayUV data analysis and with programming skills are particularly encouraged to apply.
