Job description Responsibilities For Termas longterm customer, the European Southern Observatory ESO, an international astronomical institute based in Garching close to Munich we are currently looking for experienced Software Engineers. The ESO Very Large Telescope VLT is a collection of optical and near Infrared telescopes that can operate independently or combined as an interferometer. Automated processing of telescope data is managed by a suite of data pipeline software. The Software Engineers will support activities at the site to work on tasks such as Development and maintenance of algorithms for automated processing of astronomical data generated by ESOs telescopes. The algorithms are to be implemented in ANSIC programming language, using an existing common library of the standard procedures ESOCPL. Continuous integration and regression test of the algorithm is performed using Jenkins. The final procedures are integrated into an existing suite of scientific workflow software REFLEX. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date in January 2016. Qualifications Competencies Applicants shall have an university degree, preferably in computer science or other suitable qualification together with some background in data processing. Essential skills are Strong skills developing applications in the ANSIC programming language Experience with the Jenkins continuous software integration tool Strong background in software integration Experience in the development and maintenance phases of software projects fluency in English spoken and written, as English is the working language Desirable skills are Some background in astronomy or alternatively, some experience in a related field, such as image or signal processing Experience with professional software quality assurance provisions Previous experience in a similar consultancy role, i.e., as resident consultant operating onsite within a customer organisation Exposure international and or scientific organization The position requires a great deal of independence and selfmotivation. The candidates should be able to work with little supervision, but also be able to contribute to the team effort.
