Space Applications Services performs and supports system and software engineering for the European Space Agency ESA, National Space Agencies and the aerospace industry. We are involved in international manned unmanned spacecraft programmes, earth observation, science, exploration, communications and related technology development. We require staff, wishing to join our team to work in a dynamic international environment for the following position Software Engineer for Earth Observation Applications Development SDSSAJOBEOS3 Tasks and Responsibilities Within the Software and Data System Department you will join the Earth Observation Systems EOS Team that develops complex software systems combining stateoftheart technologies from Earth Observation EO, Geographic Information Systems GIS, and Knowledge Management KM domains. The team leads projects for the European Space Agency, is involved in European Commission Research and Technology Development programmes, is developing commercial applications and frequently works with international partners. You will be responsible for the design and development of distributed satellite data processing platforms to process satellite data to create, so called downstream, user level products to OGC standards and apply cloud processing methods and technology. The work will be performed in our offices in Zaventem Brussels and may require short international travels for meetings. Qualifications and Experience For this position we expect you to have a university degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline e.g. Computer Sciences, Software Engineering, Physical Geometry, Remote Sensing. The following capabilities are mandatory 2 to 5 years of experience in design and development of distributed Javabased systems Experience with the software development lifecycle Competent in writing highquality software project documentation in English Good knowledge of Linux systems as a user and administrator. Knowledge andor experience in one or more of the following is required Cloud and IaaSrelated techniques and tools e.g. Amazon S3, Helix Nebula, Apache Hadoop Experience with satellite Earth observation processing systems, especially in the areas of specification, design and implementation of large satellite instrumentrelated data processing systems andor subsystems Familiarity with formats used in processing satellite data Competence in the use of scripting languages e.g., Python, Perl Understanding of scheduling and paralelisation of scientific software Knowledge of OGC standards, ISO Geographic Information standards, GISrelated techniques and tools is an advantage.
