Job description For our customer, ESO in Munich, Germany, we are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to develop and maintain software applications and services supporting the operational and scientific requirements of the EELT and VLT dataflow. You will work in the Data Flow Infrastructure group DFI within the Science Operations Software department SCS, which is responsible for developing and maintaining software components, which are critical for the endtoend operations of the ESO Observatories. The Data Flow Infrastructure software includes tools for proposal submission, observation preparation and execution, archive ingestion and retrieval, data organization and execution of data reduction pipelines. Responsibilities Typical activities to be undertaken are Upgrade archive storage system, analyzing requirements, gathering requirements and implementing upgrade. Developing new archive services, programmatic access to the archive and advance query and download options. Dataflow maintenance, GASGANO maintenance and pipeline infrastructure maintenance. Pipeline infrastructure maintenance and support Core Software development Requirements analysis in periodic interaction with project scientists Test automation Software integration, deployment and enduser support Further development of the Science Archive Facility, following an agile, featuredriven development process Contribution to other activities within the Dataflow project team, quickly adapting to the changing needs of our dynamic environment This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date in January 2017. You will be based at ESOs facilities in Munich, Germany. Qualifications Competencies Software engineer with a minimum of 3 years professional experience in software development. You will be able to support the full software development life cycle, from requirements gathering, design and implementation, to deployment and maintenance. Dataflow software developers are expected to write clear and concise developer and userlevel documentation. Team spirit, customer orientation and a strong sense for quality development are essential. Essential skills are Senior level expertise in Java software development Very good knowledge of relational databases and objectrelational mapping technologies Strong Linux experience Proven experience developing dynamic web applications using HTML, CSS and Javascript Solid practical familiarity with modern software engineering practices and tools, including configuration control tools, incremental iterative development, unit and integration testing and build systems like Ant or Maven Excellent command of the English language very good oral and written communication skills The following experience would be an additional asset Distributed storage systems GlusterFS, Ceph Search platforms Apache Solr, Elastic Search HibernateSpring GroovyGrails JQueryAngularJS Familiarity with astronomical data formats FITS Flexible Image Transport System What can Terma offer At Terma, we consider skilled employees, enthusiasm and job satisfaction as the very foundation of our success and as a prerequisite for the development of the bestinclass solutions that Terma provides.
