The Michigan House Tax Policy committee on Wednesday advanced legislation that would provide large tax breaks to cloud-computing data center companies, including a Nevada-based firm that plans to open a Grand Rapids campus if the package is signed into law. Three House bills, approved in a series of 8-5 votes that blurred party lines, would exempt data centers from state sales, use and personal property taxes.

A Michigan woman's photo of a birthday cake is going viral after she shared her sweet encounter with the autistic bakery employee who decorated it with a personal touch. Lisa Sarber Aldrich of Grand Rapids wrote on Facebook that she went to a Meijer grocery store to pick out a cake when she asked a "bakery-looking employee" to write a message for her.

Executives from Switch did not have Michigan on their radar for a new data center until Roger Norman, the owner of the former Steelcase pyramid, mentioned his recent acquisition in a conversation with Rob Roy, the CEO and founder of the Nevada data center giant. That offhand comment led to a visit to Grand Rapids during ArtPrize nine weeks ago, Adam Kramer, senior vice president of strategy for Switch, said in a telephone interview with MLive and the Grand Rapids Press on Monday, Nov. 30. "We fell in love with Michigan," said Kramer, who said they were unprepared for Grand Rapids' vibrant downtown and quality of life.
