KWGN: Loveland voters rejected a proposed two-year moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, Tuesday, according to unofficial election results. In a press release, the City of Loveland said the measure to impose a two-year stay against the controversial process of forcing water, sand and chemicals deep into the earth to extract oil and gas was struck down by nearly a 1,000 vote margin - 10,844 votes were casted in opposition of the ban and 9,942 voted in favor. Australia: Kimberley traditional owners green light Buru fracking

2014-06-24 22:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Australian Broadcasting Corporation: A group of Kimberley traditional owners has agreed to allow oil and gas company Buru Energy to start fracking on its land. The decision is in stark contrast to the 1970s where a clash between the Noonkanbah community and a different oil company led to riots and strikes. Buru Energy wants to use hydraulic fracturing to test for tight gas flows in four wells, in the Kimberley's Canning Basin, east of Broome. The plans were approved by the Department of Mines and Petroleum earlier this week....

Methane, which is pound-for-pound a much more potent climate-warming gas than carbon dioxide, could be leaking from hundreds of thousands of abandoned wells. And thats just in the Keystone State. A growing body of evidence says countless old wells across the country -- most poorly monitored -- could be belching up the same dangerous emissions. The study by Mary...

Pennsylvania ordered its health workers to never discuss fracking

2014-06-20 17:41:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Grist: In the heavily fracked Keystone State, the economic interests of frackers trump the health concerns of residents. That much is abundantly clear in the wake of an extraordinary story by StateImpact Pennsylvania, which interviewed two retired state health department workers. The former workers say they were ordered to not return the phone calls of residents who complained that nearby fracking was harming their health. Instead, they were told to pass messages on to their superiors, who apparently...
