Illinois House panel approves rules for fracking

Associated Press: A House committee has approved a plan to speed up hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas in Illinois. The Executive Committee voted 7-4 Monday to advance the plan by Rep. John Bradley despite protests from environmentalists. Bradley's legislation would take away the power of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to adopt rules for the extraction method known as "fracking." The Marion Democrat is frustrated because lawmakers approved fracking a year ago. IDNR still hasn't produced rules...

WNCN: The push for fracking in North Carolina is moving forward. Last week the state Senate signed off on legislation that would officially end North Carolina's moratorium on fracking next summer. The Senate voted 35-12 Thursday for the measure that seeks to move the regulatory process for hydraulic fracturing toward its conclusion. The legislation says permits could be issued starting as early as July 1, 2015. Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is used by the energy industry to extract oil and gas...

Ecologist: The fracking industry has a blind spot the size of an elephant, Biff Vernon wrote in this Open Letter to Mark Abbott, the MD of Egdon Resources - climate change, and the huge rises in sea level it will cause. 'Only carrying out orders' is no excuse. Next year we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the completion of the church spire. In another 500 years it will only be visible to the jellyfish. And thank you for having the patience to listen to me politely for over half an hour while I told...

Numbers should ease fracking debate intensity

Appeal Democrat: There's a huge political implication in the big difference between 13.7 billion barrels of oil and 600 million. Similarly, there's meaning in the gigantic difference between 15 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 6.4 billion (the average California household uses about two to three cubic feet of natural gas per day). Taken together, it's the difference between fueling the entire United States for several years and fueling it for only about one month. Those are the differences between the amount...

Daily Kos: "The costs to people, homes and the environment remain unacceptably high, but we now also know that the projected economic benefits are only a small fraction of what the oil industry has been touting." In spite of the millions spent by Big Oil on lobbying in Sacramento every year, the California Senate Appropriations Committee on Friday voted 4 to 2 to approve a bill, SB 1132, to place a moratorium on fracking (hydraulic fracturing) in the state. SB 1132, authored by Senators Holly Mitchell...
