Nvidia introduces Tegra Note tablet

(Telecompaper) Nvidia has unveiled its own tablet computer to highlight its chip technology. The Tegra Note running the Android OS will be available in the coming months for USD 199 with a range of partners, including EVGA and PNY Technologies in North America; EVGA, Oysters and ZOTAC in Europe; Colorful, Shenzhen Homecare Technology and Zotac in Asia-Pacific; and Xolo in India. The 7-inch tablet runs the Tegra 4 processor with a 72-core GeForce GPU and quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU. It also features Nvidia's DirectStylus technology to control the device with a touch stylus pen, and the Nvidia PureAudio technology to improve sound over the stereo speakers. It comes with 16 GB storage and a microSD card slot, as well as micro HDMI port, 5 megapixel rear camera and a VGA front webcam. Nvidia is also providing the SmugMug Camera Awesome app, with features like tap-to-track and 100 fps video with slow-motion playback, and TegraZone gaming, with access to exclusive games optimised for its processor. Further software updates will be provided over the air.

Despite the Surface RT's miserable performance, and almost every other tablet maker jumping ship to Qualcomm, it appears that the Surface RT 2 -- due out in October alongside Windows 8.1 -- will still be powered by Nvidia's Tegra SoC. With Intel's Bay Trail due to hit the market at around the same time, and potentially offering more performance than the ARM-based Tegra 4, does the second-generation Surface RT really stand a chance?

"We don't expect as much return from the investment as we had hoped," CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said on a Thursday conference call to discuss Nvidia's second-quarter financial earnings. He said the expected shortfall was related to one particular platform, and though he didn't name it, the reference to Windows RT was clear.

Yesterday, Nvidia's Shield handheld game console was finally released to the public -- and today, it has been torn down and benchmarked, revealing impressive performance figures for the Tegra 4 SoC's first outing. The first batch of Shield reviews were generally negative, citing a high price and limited games library, but they did all agree on one positive point: The crippling lack of functionality aside, the hardware itself is seriously impressive.
