Samsung to announce Galaxy S5, new smartwatch in H1
2014-01-09 10:02:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Samsung plans to release its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, by April and will present a new version of its Galaxy Gear smartwatch at the same time, said Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of the company's mobile business. In an interview with Bloomberg, Lee said the company expects to stick to its usual timetable of releasing a new flagship model "in the first half of each year, around March and April". She said the launch will also include a Gear successor "with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved". The company will announce at least one other wearable device this year, Lee added. The executive said the S5 will offer more distinguishing features than its predecessor. "When we moved to S4 from S3, it's partly true that consumers couldn't really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn't as big," Lee said. "For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it's about the display and the feel of the cover."

ZTE plans smartwatch launch in Q2 2014
2013-11-25 13:36:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) ZTE plans to launch a smartwatch in the second quarter of next year, according to Lu Qianhao, head of the company's handset marketing strategy. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Lu said that ZTE's smartwatch will offer technological features that are similar to existing products such as the Galaxy Gear, but will sell for lower prices as it tries to appeal to China's cost-conscious consumers. "We are focusing on the mainstream market," he said. The company plans to unveil the smartwatch in the first quarter of next year and start selling it in the second quarter, said Lu. ZTE will first sell its smartwatch only in China, but it wants to gradually enter the US and European markets later. The device will only be compatible with ZTE's own smartphones, but the company may consider releasing other smartwatches in the future that will work with all Android smartphones from any brands, Lu said. He said that the company is also considering other possibilities in wearable computing, such as smart glasses and smartphone-connected shoes for healthcare purposes.
