Qualcomm on Wednesday announced its own smartwatch that will have a low-power Mirasol display and be compatible with Android mobile devices.The smartwatch, called Toq (pronounced "talk"), will ship in the fourth quarter this year. Qualcomm's announcement comes on the same day Samsung announced its Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which has a 1.6-inch screen and offers 25 hours of battery life.

Samsung's smartwatch sounds amazing and looks amazing -- on paper. In the flesh, the Galaxy Gear is a seriously limited gadget that's tethered to a phone and/or tablet that no one owns yet. So much for innovation.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Gear smartwatch

(Telecompaper) Samsung has unveiled its first smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, at the Ifa show in Berlin. Designed to connect to Samsung's Galaxy tablets and smartphones, the watch delivers notifications on incoming messages, such as calls, texts, emails and alerts, as well as previews of those messages and the possibility for users to accept or ignore the messages. When an incoming message requires more than a quick glance, the Smart Relay feature will bring the full content up on their Galaxy phone or tablet. The Galaxy Gear also has a built-in speaker for voice commands, called S Voice, allowing users to conduct hands-free calls, draft messages, create calendar entries, set alarms and check the weather. It also comes with a 1.9 megapixel camera, called the Memographer feature, and a Voice Memo, to record spoken notes as text on their Galaxy device. The Galaxy Gear can also be used to control the smartphone's lock screen or music settings, locate the phone and track the user's physical activity, using built-in sensors. As a wristwatch, the Gear has a 1.63-inch screen and comes loaded with 10 different clock options and more choices downloadable via Samsung Apps. It will be available in six colours at launch, initially with the Galaxy Note 3, also launched at Ifa. Samsung said the devices will launch in more than 140 countries around the world, from 25 September.
