Qualcomm to launch Toq smartwatch from 2 December

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Qualcomm Connected Experiences, will launch its Qualcomm Toq (talk) smartwatch on 2 December for USD 349.99. Toq is compatible with Android smartphones and features proprietary Qualcomm MEMs Technologies' Qualcomm Mirasol display technology, providing an always-on experience with multiple days of battery life and visibility in bright sunlight, Qualcomm WiPower LE technology for "drop and go" wireless charging and wireless Bluetooth audio capability. Using the Bluetooth technology, Toq users can accept or reject calls, view text messages and meeting alerts and selectively receive notifications from their smartphone or AllJoyn-enabled devices directly from their wrist. Qualcomm plans to add additional functionality to the Toq smartwatch through software upgrades.

Google could be a few months away from mass production of a smartwatch, a move that would put it in competition with vendors Pebble Technology, Sony, and Samsung Electronics, according to media reports. Apple is widely expected to enter the fray soon as well. Smartwatches can typically run simple applications by themselves, but are most useful when paired with a smartphone over a low-power Bluetooth link, allowing them to relay information from the phone's applications and Internet connection.

(Telecompaper) Google's smartwatch is currently in late-stage development and the company is in talks with Asian suppliers to begin mass production of the device, people familiar with the matter said, reported The Wall Street Journal. The new device will run on Android and will come integrated with Google Now, the company's intelligent personal assistant, a person familiar with the situation said. Google has been working to reduce power consumption on the smartwatch so it will require less frequent battery charges, the person said. The integration of Google Now will also allow the new smartwatch to communicate with other devices such as a smartphone and draw information from a user's email, the person said. The device may be ready for mass production within months, the person said. The Wall Street Journal first reported in June that Google was interested in developing a wristwatchlike device.
