Microsoft adds 12 mln active Teams users in past week

(Telecompaper) Microsoft has grown the daily active user base for its Teams messaging platform by 12 million in the past week, from 32 million users to 44 million as of 19 March. The number has more than doubled since November 2019 when it last gave customer figures. The company announced the user figures along with new features for the app launching later this year.

TIM fined EUR 116 mln for abusing dominant position in fibre rollout

(Telecompaper) Italian antitrust watchdog AGCM has fined Telecom Italia (TIM) a total of EUR 116 million for abusing its dominant position in the expansion of its fibre-optic broadband network to underserved and rural areas across the country. In a decision issued some 3 years after the investigation was launched, Italy's antitrust authority accused TIM of purposely taking steps to slow down the process of rolling out broadband in so-called digital divide areas by appealing against the tenders launched by the government.

French FTTP roll-out hits new record with 1.6 mln premises passed in Q4

(Telecompaper) French network operators ramped up their fibre deployments in the fourth quarter, bringing FTTP connectivity to another 1.6 million homes and businesses. This represents a new high after two record quarters, when the number of new premises passed the 1 million mark (1.2 and 1.1 million in Q3 and Q2 respectively). Overall, 18.4 million premises had access to FTTP services at the end of 2019, up 35 percent year-on-year, said regulator Arcep in its latest fixed broadband report.

Quibi raises USD 750 mln more ahead of launch

(Telecompaper) Short-form video service Quibi has raised USD 750 million in second-round funding, after raising USD 400 in January, Variety reported. The company said the money should take it to the point of profitability. The service, started by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitmas, has raised USD 1.75 billion to date. No investor names were disclosed for this round, but the company said they included new and existing investors from "studios, major technology companies, strategic partners and financial investors."
