MediaTek growth slows in Q4

(Telecompaper) MediaTek reported fourth-quarter sales of TWD 55.45 billion, down 3.5 percent sequentially due to a seasonal slowdown after the year-end holiday peak in the smartphone market. Quarterly revenues were stil up 39.3 percent year-on-year, thanks to its takeover of Mstar. Over the full year 2014, MediaTek grew revenues 56.6 percent to TWD 213.06 billion. The chipmaker's gross margin totaled 47.9 percent in Q4, down 1.2 percentage points sequentially and up 2.2 percentage points year-over-year. The quarter-over-quarter decrease was mainly due to product transition and the year-over-year increase to a higher mix of smartphone and high-end products, the company said. Net profit reached TWD 10.41 billion, down 21.7 percent sequentially after an increase in investment in "talent and technology", MediaTek said. R&D expenses reached 22.5 percent of revenues in the quarter. The net profit figure was still up 20.8 percent on an annual basis.

Vodafone slows drop in revenue, capex up 39% in Q3

(Telecompaper) Vodafoe Group slowed the decline in organic service revenue to 0.4 percent in its fiscal third quarter to December. In Europe, organic service revenues fell 2.7 percent to GBP 6.63 billion, as the mobile operator returned to growth in the UK and the drop in revenues relented to 1.0 percent in Germany. In the Africa, Middle East and Asia region, organic service revenue grew 5.9 percent year-on-year to GBP 3.06 billion, led by strong demand for data services. The company also reported a 39 percent increase in capital expenditure to GBP 2.13 billion. Vodafone said its Project Spring investment programme was progressing well, leading to a reduction in dropped calls and 65 percent 4G coverage in Europe. Over time, the compny expects the improved networks will lead to further improvements in churn, ARPU and customer perception. Vodafone has launched LTE in 18 markets and said it had 13.7 million customers using 4G. The operator confirmed its outlook for the full year to March of EBITDA of 11.6-11.9 billion and positive free cash flow after capex.

Pace of German solar panel additions slows in 2014

Reuters: German solar panel installations fell by 42.4 percent last year to 1.9 gigawatts (GW), data from energy regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur, showed. The government had allowed up to 2.6 GW of new units to receive feed-in tariffs each year, showing that efforts to rein in the expansion of solar have been successful. A green energy law last summer set the caps on new builds as well as requiring operators to align their output volumes more directly with the market rather than relying on subsidies....
