For the location in Darmstadt, Germany we are looking for a Data Services Engineering Software Consultant fm at Eumetsat. Tasks Preparations for future satellite Programmes including Meteosat Third Generation MTG, EUMETSAT Polar System 2nd Generation EPSSG and Copernicus, previously known as GMES Global Monitoring for Environment and Security, Sentinel3 are ongoing. The EUMETSAT TSS Technical and Scientific Support Department provides in an integrated manner scientific and engineering support to EUMETSATs programmes during the development and operations phases, and process assurance project control to the whole organisation. Within the TSS Department, the GSI Generic Systems and Infrastructure Division is in charge of engineering, maintaining and upgrading generic ground segment functions, services, infrastructure and tools in response to requirements of operational and future programmes. The Data Services Engineering Team within the GSI Division is responsible for the maintenance and evolution of all Data Access Long Term Storage services to address both the increased needs for operational systems and the added requirements for the future programmes in unified development logic. As a member of the Generic and Systems Infrastructure Division, the key person shall provide support to the development and maintenance of data services systems. The duties range from the support to the operation of the EUMETSAT Earth Observation Portal to the analysis, design, development testing and maintenance of software functions maintaineddeveloped within the Data Services Engineering Team. This may include the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, the support to the procurement of hardware and software, and the coordination with external providers of maintenance services. The particular focus on the tasks to be performed are the operational support and the design, implementation and testing of software corrections and evolutions. In particular the tasks will include Operational Support for data services systems Monitoring the performance and behavior Problem Investigation and anomaly raising First Line System and Software support Installation of software OnCall support Design, implementation and testing of software corrections and evolutions User Interface Development Server Side Development Testing Unit and Integration Testing Acceptance and integration of external software Verification Validation support Requirements management Review and analysis of user requirements Specification of system and software requirements Generation and maintenance of technical documentation System and Software Requirements Architectural Design Interface Control Documents Software Unit and Integration Test Plans Maintenance Procedures Participation and organisation of technical meetings and formal reviews Preparation and production of routine reports Essential requirements In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline, the key person must have excellent team working skills, being able to work autonomous and have good analytical skills. The key person shall have skills and experience in the following mandatory areas minimum 5 years for each System Maintenance Skills Extensive experience in the provision of first line support for operational systems, which includes the monitoring of the performance, problem investigation, coordination of resolutions and oncall support Software Engineering Skills Extensive experience in designing and developing software components and applications in the Java programming language under Unix Sun Solaris, Linux using Object Oriented OO approach including design patterns for web portals Extensive experience in developing software applications using interfaces to relational database management systems RDBMSand management of their schema System Development Maintenance Skills Strong technical expertise for translating user requirements into software requirements, architecture evolution and implementation Extensive experience in software development and maintenance using a formal life cycle resulting in deliveries to customers. Description This consultancy is primarily to support the development of aerosol products from instruments on the EUMETSAT Polar System series of satellites, with a particular focus on multisensor products. However evaluation and refinement of aerosol algorithms for the current MSG SEVIRI instrument is also in scope and further development and extension of algorithms for application to future satellite missions will be considered. Associated with this activity are the development of prototype software and the validation of the subsequent products, and also generation of supporting documentation such as test data descriptions, algorithm specifications and validation reports. The consultant will be fully integrated in the Atmospheric Composition Team within the Remote Sensing and Products Division but will also be expected to interface with experts across EUMETSAT as required. The tasks of the Key person will include development of algorithms for aerosol products from instruments on the Metop series of satellites with a particular focus on multiinstrument aerosol products, drawing on the science of current established products from hyperspectral infrared and UVVisible sounders and multichannel imagers evaluation and refinement of aerosol algorithms for the current MSG SEVIRI instrument taking into account the constraints imposed by the final goal of implementation of the products within an operational processing system development of prototype software code for the purposes of testing and validation the algorithms developed generation of test data required for the verification of the algorithm and products validation of the products produced by the prototype software code using independent data generation of associated documentation including test data descriptions, Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents ATBD, Product User Guides, Calibration and Validation Plan, Validation reports etc provision of support for implementation and validation of the products within the operational processing environment interfacing with experts across EUMETSAT as needed collaboration with expert groups and the wider scientific community outside EUMETSAT as appropriate provision of support for algorithm development and potentially prototype software development for future polar orbiting missions including next generation hyperspectral infrared and UVVisible sounders and multichannel imaging instruments with improved potential for deriving aerosol products. The tasks of the Key person will be carried out mainly at EUMETSAT facilities in Darmstadt, but travel within Europe may be required for certain activities. Profile The key person shall have the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision and have good interpersonal skills. Heshe shall be familiar with satellite instrument characteristics for Earth observation, in particular for atmospheric composition, meteorology and climate monitoring. Heshe shall have the ability to write concise and comprehensive scientific and technical reports. In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Key person shall have a minimum of 5 years experience in the field of remote sensing product development including at least 2 years of aerosol product development. Specifically the key person shall have experience in aerosol optical properties retrieval from satellite data inverse modelling of atmospheric composition using vector radiative transfer models calibration and validation of satellite data products the EPS missions and instruments writing concise and comprehensive scientific and technical reports demonstrated skills in a higher programming language specification, design and coding of complex product processors testing and verification of complex data processing systems. The following areas of expertise would be an advantage familiarity with the algorithm basis for MSG SEVIRI aerosol product quality control of satellite data and products operational product processing environments software build environments and tools e.g. make, imake, eclipse, insure source code control system, e.g. Subversion or CVS.
