Telecommunications System Engineer Overview The UK Space Sector is growing with a target size of 40bn by 2030. The new ESA Centre at Harwell will house 100 staff by the end of 2015, providing an exciting international environment focussed on Satellite Applications and Telecommunications. HE Space is seeking a team of 8 telecomms specialists to support the ESA Atlas programme which provides opportunities for industrial partners to gain flight testing of innovative product and service ideas. As part of this team you will be given the opportunity to work across the project lifecycle from prephase A studies through to design and development of both satellite and ground segment technologies, giving you a unique opportunity to build your experience and develop your interest in satellite telecommunications. Key Tasks and Responsibilities Evaluate the technical proposals from industrial partners to Atlas funding. The proposals will cover both satellite and ground segment technologies and services. Preparation of Market Analysis and studies identifying end user needs in future satcoms systems. Project Management of Atlas funded projects in collaboration with the industrial partners. Preparation of technical proposals in support of new satcom systems. Design Authority and technical lead in the architectural definition of the end of end satcoms system including both space and ground segment. Lead system tradeoffs and studies to evaluate new concepts and technologies across satcoms systems. Support the negotiation, monitoring and control of contracts and activities related to system studies and Phases A of new telecommunication satellite projects. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree or equivalent qualification in Physics or Engineering Several years of industrial experience in satellite telecommunication systems design, including substantial experience in satellite payload, platform or telecommunication endtoend system engineering Specific experience in broadband or mobile satellite telecommunication systems is an asset Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree or equivalent qualification in engineering Several years of experience in satellite telecommunications user andor ground segment Understanding of satcom ground segment architectures for broadcasting, broadband, trunking, backhauling and mobile applications Expertise in some or all the areas of o Terminal modem design FPGA and ASIC Communication protocols including quality of service aspects, upper layer techniques in IP and networking, air interface techniques, RF and Microwave including LNAs, SSPAs, TWTAs, filters, frequency converters, Ground antennas for both fixed and mobile satcom systems Definition and implementation of ground solutions for satcom mobile systems experience working in industry Management of development contracts for ground segment products and technology Specific experience in the satellite telecommunication commercial market development is desirable Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University or equivalent qualification in engineering or science, and experience in payload andor satellite technology and products for telecommunications satellites General experience with the design, analysis, qualification, testing and implementation of satellite payload equipment for telecommunication satellites, with substantial experience in one or more of the following o Management of development contracts for satellite payload equipment. o design, development andor exploitation of active RF units, such as low noise amplifiers channel amplifiers and linearisers power amplifiers frequency converters digital signal processors A sound knowledge of multiple different types of active payload equipment and their functions at payload level is required Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage.
