Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Power Plants Fell in 2011

2013-02-05 23:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Central: Greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. power plants fell 4.6 percent in in 2011, according to new government figures. That's a sign that power generation is relying less on coal and more on natural gas and renewable sources, EPA said. The agency released its second annual listing of emissions from the nation's largest industrial polluters Tuesday, compiling emissions data from 8,000 facilities nationwide, including power plants, refineries and factories. (The data is available online, via the agency's...

Greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. power plants down 4.6 percent

2013-02-05 20:23:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: Greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. power plants fell 4.6 percent in 2011 as more generators were switched to cleaner-burning natural gas and renewable sources from coal, according to new data from the Environmental Protection Agency. The agency's second inventory of greenhouse gas emissions reported by the country's largest industrial polluters showed that power plants - which account for one-third of U.S. emissions - released 2.22 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in 2011....

Earthworms Increase Soils Greenhouse Gas Emissions

2013-02-04 14:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Central: Most earthworms may be tiny, but a new study suggests their impact on the climate could be mighty. Researchers had long assumed the creepy crawlers help store carbon in soils by consuming fallen leaves and other decaying plant matter, which they deposit in soil in their cast, or droppings. But newer studies suggest the worms may actually increase soils' output of two key greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. A new meta-analysis, published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change,...
