In all, 3.9 billion barrels of oil equivalent of known reserves are on offer in Mexico's first round of auctions. BHP Billiton has pre-qualified to bid in Mexico's first auction of offshore exploration drilling permits, but the signs are that the mining major may save its firepower for the prized deepwater blocks that are only expected to come up for tender in early 2016.

Reuters: Royal Dutch Shell PLC said on Monday an icebreaker crucial to planned Arctic oil drilling will be sent to Portland, Oregon to repair a gash in its hull, but the issue is not expected to delay the beginning of drilling off Alaska later in July. Shell crew on the Fennica icebreaker last week found the 39-inch (1 meter) gash in the hull, likely caused by an uncharted shoal. New drilling activity took a slide in the Eagle Ford shale amid $52 per barrel oil prices, according to figures released on July 10. West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices had been trading around $60 per barrel in recent weeks, but it since sank to around $52 in recent days over uncertainty about Greece and Iran flooding the market with cheap oil. Figures from the Baker Hughes rig count released on July 10 showed that new drilling fell from 106 active rigs to 102 operating in the Eagle Ford shale region just south of San Antonio.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and his Kazakh counterpart Karim Massimov launched the first exploratory drilling of the Satpayev oil block by India's OVL and Kazakhstan's KazMunaiGaz. ONGC Videsh Ltd. had acquired 25% stake in the Satpayev oil block in the North Caspian Sea in 2011.
