National Geographic: Scientists have measured what is likely the highest temperature ever on Antarctica: 63.5 degrees Fahrenheit (17.5 Celsius). The measurements were made last Tuesday at Argentina's Esperanza Base, on the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, according to the meteorological website Weather Underground. California city hit by gas explosion backs tougher penalty

A San Francisco suburb hit by a deadly gas-line blast in 2010 is supporting a proposed tougher penalty for the utility involved. San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane said Tuesday that his city backs a plan to add another $200 million to the penalty proposed for Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
