For our customer, ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany, we are seeking an experienced Flight Dynamics Operations Engineer with primary areas of responsibility Command Generation. You will be primarily assigned to a particular service within the Earth Observation Missions but with the possibility of supporting other service andor missions. This activity is primarily related to BIOMASS, which is in preparation and expected to be launched in 2022. Services may also be requested related to other Earth Explorers SWARM, CRYOSAT2, Aeolus and CLUSTERII, currently in routine operations. Responsibilities The general activities to be supported depending on the subsystem and phase of the mission are Command Generation Execution of and support to operational tasks, in the context of command generation Generation of task related command parameters Generation of task related reports Flight Dynamics Application Layer Maintenance of elements of the Flight Dynamics Application Layer Flight Dynamics System Development Specification of modifications, enhancements and additions to existing software elements Implementation of modifications, enhancements and additions to existing software elements Installation of modifications, enhancements and additions to existing software elements on operational platforms design, coordination and implementation of tests Participation in tests Setup procedures Flight Dynamics SubSystem configuration Coordination of internal and external interfaces and actitivities across subsystems General Flight Dynamics operations engineering activities During the oncall periods the staff on call may be provided by ESOC with a mobile phone depending on the operational needs. Dependent on the case the staff may need to come to ESOC on short notice typically within one hour to provide the required operations support. Details of the actual oncall service shall be agreed between ESA and the provider. This is a fulltime position to be located at ESOCs premises in Darmstadt with the planned start date on 1st June 2021. Qualifications Competencies In addition to having a university degree in a relevant engineering field, astronomy, mathematics or physics, you should be able to cover many of the following topics Essential skills are Skills to apply their knowledge to develop solutions to technical mathematical and dynamical problems in cooperation with customers and other experts Ability to define, implement, validate and operate software which applies the above solutions using e.g. Linux scripting languages, Fortran 90 and C Will to take operational responsibility in multidiscipline teams Fluency in English, both in speech and writing Coordinate and interact with other service providers in operations and other fields. Ability to work independently Desirable skills include Familiarity with the ESOC environment Familiarityexperience with Flight Dynamics operations engineering tasks Experience dealing with external interfaces Experience with Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration The ability to multitask efficiently working on multiple activities, multiple subsystems and if applicable multiple missions simultaneously. This role will allow the right candidate to shape solutions for our missions. Whilst the candidate will primarily work in the UK, they will interact extensively with a larger team in Astroscales Japan office, and may expect to be required to travel to Tokyo as needed in support of Astroscale projects and operations. Responsibilities Development and architectural design activities for the flight software on Astroscale spacecraft Derive and maintain software requirements, define software solutions and system architectures. Define ICDs, development and verification plans. Design, develop, and validate spacecraft flight software, ground software, and simulation software. Coordinate with other teams at subsystem and system level to identify software needs and solutions. Support definition and generation of ConOps. Perform Flight Software verification, validation and integration. Participate in Mission System Test and Simulation campaigns. Support knowledge transfer from Astroscale teams globally and provide technical review inputs to projects across the Astroscale organisation. Essential Skills Bachelor or masters degree in computer science, software engineering or relevant engineering science discipline. 3 years of commercial experience in flight software development for satellites. Experience with embedded systems programming CC. Knowledge of software development methodologies embedded software engineering. Experience in using and modifying Board Support Packages. Familiarity with UML and SysML. Familiarity with commonly used protocols and standards for spacecraft communications, such as CCSDS, CAN, Spacewire. Experience of implementing realtime systems and software solutions on spacecraft missions. Experience in developing and implementing test plans for spacecraft. Proactive and selfmanaging, able to plan and effectively lead areas of responsibility whilst contributing collaboratively within a closeknit team. Desired Skills Familiarity with Agile Scrum software development practices. Experience of all stages of mission design lifecycle from initial concept to design, test, and operations. Knowledge of cFE and cFS flight software. Knowledge of ground segment architectures. Basic Linux system administration, shell scripts, make, etc. Development on Linux systems. Knowledge of scripting languages e.g. Python, Matlab, bash. Knowledge of assembler for microcontrollers. A basic knowledge in the following areas debris removal, endoflife, inorbit servicing.
