Samsung unveils first Tizen smartphone, to launch in Q3

2014-06-02 09:29:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics unveiled the Samsung Z, the first commercially available smartphone powered by the Tizen operating system. The phone will be on show at the Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco from 03 June and launch first in Russia in Q3. Samsung said it plans to bring the phone to other markets later. The company launched in February smartwatches running the Tizen OS, but a smartphone using the software has long been delayed. Based on Linux and originally developed with Intel, Tizen is expected to help Samsung reduce its reliance on Google's Android OS. Samsung said the Z smartphone will look somewhat different from its usual Galaxy range, with a more angular design with "sophisticated" lines. According to the manufacturer, the device offers "a differentiated user experience in an efficient and light-weight smartphone". The phone comes with a 4.8-inch HD Super Amoled display and a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor. Samsung said it offers improved memory management, faster start-up time and immediate multi-tasking capabilities. It also supports 2D and 3D graphic qualities, smoother scrolling and an improved rendering performance for web browsing. A built-in fingerprint sensor further enhances security on the phone, and the Ultra Power Saving Mode lets the phone stay operational even at minimal battery levels.

Motorola to shut down smartphone factory in Texas

2014-06-02 08:41:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Google is abandoning its attempt to build smartphones in the US and shutting down the Motorola factory in Texas, due to weak sales and high costs. Motorola said it will close the factory in Fort Worth by the end of this year, the Wall Street Journal reports. Motorola opened the factory in May 2013, and the site employed 3,800 people at its peak late last year. Most of these worked on behalf of the contractor Flextronics. The factory now employs about 700 workers who assemble high-end Moto X smartphones sold in the US, a Motorola spokesman said. Motorola President Rick Osterloh that the company found "the North American market was exceptionally tough". The Moto X sold for USD 600 without a contract when it went on sale in September, and the price was subsequently lowered to USD 399. However, the company failed to reach enough volume with the phone to achieve economies of scale at the factory. Osterloh said the decision to shut the plant was independent of Google's agreement to sell Motorola to Lenovo. The company will continue to make the Moto X at other manufacturing sites in Brazil and China.
