Amazon, at long last, is set to launch a smartphone with a glasses-free 3D "holographic" display. Invites were sent out late yesterday for a special launch event on June 18 in Seattle. Accompanying the invite was a hilariously awkward teaser video (embedded below) with the new device just out of frame, with a bunch of starry-eyed first-time users wobbling and bobbling and gyrating to trigger the screen's 3D effect.

Amazon to unveil own smartphone 18 June - report

(Telecompaper) Amazon has announced an event 18 June in Seattle to unveil its newest device. The company opened the invitation to the event on Twitter but did not provide further details on its plans. A black thin device, similar to the corner of a phone, was shown in a picture with the tweet. According to multiple media reports, the e-commerce giant is expected to unveil its first smartphone at the event.

It's great that Nassau bus riders can now pay via smartphone, but it raises a question: When will the Metropolitan Transportation Authority catch up with technologies other industries have had for years? For subways and city buses you can at least buy a MetroCard, but for the LIRR, purchase options are about what they were 100 years ago.
