Orange to expand FTTH offering to all French rural fibre networks
2019-03-14 09:59:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Orange will soon commercialise its FTTH broadband offers in France across all the public initiative networks (known as RIP, Reseaux d'Initiative Publique) currently being deployed by third-party operators such as Covage, Altitude and Axione. Nearly 2 million French premises were covered by these rural networks at the end of 2018, according to telecom regulator Arcep. Within this footprint, Orange's fibre offers are already available to over 500,000 households and businesses. Coverage will be extended to nearly 3 million eligible premises by the end of 2019, across public initiative networks run by third-party operators and those where Orange is responsible for the deployment.

TIM, Wind Tre and Fastweb warned over misleading fibre advertising
2019-03-05 09:48:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Italian antitrust watchdog AGCM has issued a fresh warning to operators Telecom Italia (TIM), Wind Tre and Fastweb over the use of misleading advertising in the promotion of their respective fibre-optic services. All three operators received hefty fines totalling over EUR 13 million last year for using unfair commercial practices to promote their fibre-optic offers. In three separate resolutions, the watchdog has now accused the operators of a continued lack of transparency regarding the characteristics of the offers in terms of speed, cost and geographical scope as well as the expected benefits thereof, in breach of Italy's consumer code.

Last week in telecoms: Swiss consolidation and bidders for Portuguese fibre
2019-03-04 07:00:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The news of Sunrise (-8.5%) buying UPC Switzerland sent its shares down, whereas the selling party, Liberty Global (+0.6%) ended the week up, suggesting that the latter got itself a good deal. Indeed, 25 percent Sunrise shareholder Freenet (+4.5%) said it wouldn't join in Sunrise's rights issue, needed to pay for the cash portion of the takeover, but that shouldn't come as a surpise. It looks like this will not stand in the way of the deal.
