Job description Our customer, EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany, is an intergovernmental organization supplying climaterelated satellite data, images and products 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to national meteorological services in Europe and other users worldwide. We are seeking an experienced Data Storage Services System Software Engineer to provide support to EUMETSAT in the development and maintenance of the storage systems making up EUMETSATs Storage Network Infrastructure SNI, with special focus on archive and retrieval services. The EUMETSAT SNI provides a backbone of storage services to all EUMETSATs programs, unified under a management framework. It satisfies storage service requirements in terms of size, performance, redundancy, availability, security, supporting meteorological archive, data protection and disaster recovery. Responsibilities As a Data Storage Services System Software Engineer, your tasks will include the administration and operation of the central archive systems, maintenance of the external storage, inventory and support to the operation of the storage services. Specifically, you will be responsible for the following tasks Monitoring of the facility services, storage and archive performance, investigation into HW and SW problems and performance of the relevant corrective actions Ensuring that in case of HW or SW failures the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, performance of backuparchive procedures Liaison with the external providers of HW and SW maintenance for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions Analysis, planning and performance of HW and SW upgrades or reconfigurations, taking care of compatibility issues between storage subsystems Implementation and maintenance of scripts andor procedures where applicable for the automated andor controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of associated technical documentation Provision of support to design future evolution of the facility to accommodate the requirements of current and future programs, generation and maintenance of associated documentation Always apply the relevant change management control and maintenance procedures You will be required to prepare, coordinate and communicate in advance and in detail critical activities, to be shared for review and approval prior to the actual execution of the work. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date in September 2016. You will be nominally based at EUMETSATs facilities in Darmstadt, Germany. Working time is normal working hours, and may require standby and oncall support outside normal working hours. Support to critical operations might be required. Qualifications Competencies In addition to having a university degree or equivalent, you will have minimum of 5 years experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed storage systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterized by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements. You should possess an expert knowledge and extensive work experience in the Storage solutions, Storage Area Networks SAN, Backup Archive technologies and should have demonstrated experience with the design and implementation of the following highly available system and software environments SAN topology, managing Brocade or equivalent Directors and departmental switches Storage virtualization solutions EMC VPLEX or equivalent serving many different types of storage client platforms Enterprise and Departmental storage solutions EMC VMAX, HDS or equivalent file, block or object based Big Data storage solutions Automation of storage services provision, Cloud Storage, Data Analytics Unix, Linux operating system, virtualization technologies Generation and maintenance of technical documentation in English Furthermore, it would be a distinct advantage to have experience with the following Implementation of archive solutions using Hierarchical Storage Management HSM system SAMFS or equivalent High end, automated, tape library systems StorageTek SL8500 series with ACSLS Software Implementation of backup and recovery solutionsSymantec Netbackup or equivalent SystemService Monitoring using Nagios framework The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. LSE Space is looking for an experienced Engineer mf in order to fulfill the task of Data Processing System Procurement Engineer at our customer EUMETSAT in DarmstadtGermany. The primary responsibilities of this role will be The consultant will be integrated into the Data Processing Team of the MTG Ground Segment. The overarching task of the consultant will be to support the procurement activities for the MTG L0, L1 and L2 data processing facilities, primarily by developing and consolidating the knowledge needed to acquire the mission data processing functionality for online and offline functions, including functionality providing common services, such as data handling, processor allocation and monitoring, job control, and general MC, and by supporting the technical interface to industrial consortia. The consultant will support the development, verification validation, onsite delivery, acceptance and warranty of the MTG data processing systems. In addition, support for ground segment integration and system validation activities may be required. In particular the tasks will include Support the procurement of the data processing elements by advising on technical solutions proposed by the contractor and by reviewing documentation to confirm its compliance with the requirements Support organisation and execution of facility reviews e.g. PDR, CDR, TRR including processing and handling of the RIDs, tracking RIDs resolutions and actions, verification of satisfactory documentation updates. Support management of the requirements baseline for data processing elements, including L0, L1 and L2 detailed processing specifications, and their lifecycle, including organisation of technical meetings for requirement consolidation, implementing and tracking documentation updates Follow up the implementations of the framework elements and the operational processors support and monitor contractors, organise and participate to progress meetings, formal reviews, technical and interface definition workshops Support a proper knowledge transfer from EUMETSAT to industry, especially for operational concepts, working practices and procedures, and ensure that the design and implementation of the data processing system correctly support such operational needs Develop and maintain, as well as support procurement of test tools and test dataset including reference processors and reference test datasets that reflect the functionality defined in the processing specifications Support the verification and validation, deployment, acceptance and warranty of the operational software. Requirements In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as computer science, physics, mathematics or remote sensing, the Consultant shall have a minimum of three years experience in software engineering for operational processing of satellite or meteorological data. Knowledge and experience of the following is mandatory Processes, phases and documentation related to procurement of data processing systems, preferably for operational satellite payload data processing for Earth Observations System and Software engineering as well as specification, development, and testing of operational software, preferably for earth observation systems Formal software testing, verification and validation of data processing systems andor product processors L1 or L2 for satellite data or other meteorological data Development and testing of software in UNIX environments. Practical knowledge of as many as possible of the following will be an advantage Radiometric and spectral calibration, use of radiative transfer models, development of complex scientific software for the processing of large amount of data ECSS standards The ability to perform under high workloads Very good communication, presentation and listening skills including the ability to rapidly absorb, and make use of, information presented in written and oral communications in a dynamic context. Academic and work related requirements A University degree in engineering, physics, or software domains is required. Perfect command of English, verbal and written.
