Cellnex in advanced talks to acquire EUR 9 bln Hutchison tower business - report

(Telecompaper) Spanish infrastructure operator Cellnex Telecom is in advanced negotiations to acquire CK Hutchison's European mobile tower business for around EUR 9 billion, according to unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg. Cellnex is already Europe's largest towers company and has recently agreed to acquire 7,000 Polish cites from France's Iliad Group to increase its portfolio to 73,000 towers in 9 countries by the end of H1 2021. CK Hutchison and Cellnex have been in talks since at least July, when Bloomberg reported that the Hong Kong-based conglomerate was considering the sale of a minority stake in its European towers unit.

Ligado raises USD 3.85 bln for L-band plans

(Telecompaper) Ligado Networks said it has raised USD 3.85 billion in new capital, which it will use to develop a low-power terrestrial network in the L-Band for 5G and IoT services, and for mission-critical industries. The money was raised from new and existing investors led by JP Morgan Chase & Co. "Today is a great day,"Ligado CEO Doug Smith said. "We've secured our license, we've raised the necessary capital, and we're in a great position to work with the industry to get this spectrum deployed for 5G to support critical industries across the US," the CEO added.

Telefonica in talks to raise EUR 5 bln for German fibre expansion - report

(Telecompaper) Telefonica is in talks with lenders and investors to receive EUR 5 billion for fibre expansion in Germany, Reuters reports, citing sources. Banks would lend two thirds of the money and the rest would be equity, including from an investor now holding exclusive talks with Telefonica. The company will invest the cash in fibre projects one step at a time. Telefonica Germany could take a passive equity stake in the new infrastructure unit responsible for fibre expansion, the report added, and could become an anchor customer.

Cisco ordered to pay USD 1.9 bln to cybersecurity firm for infringing patents

(Telecompaper) Cisco has been ordered to pay USD 1.9 billion to Centripetal Networks for copying its cybersecurity patents, Reuters reported. A US district judge in Norfolk, Virginia made the ruling, saying Cisco was found to have infringed four patents belonging to Centripetal Networks, also based in Virginia. The judge did not find infringement of a fifth patent.
