TSMC to put USD 12 bln into building 5 nm chip plant in Arizona

(Telecompaper) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) has announced it is ready to put USD 12 billion into a chip factory in the US. The factory would come to Arizona, where Intel also has plants. With support from both federal and state government, construction will begin next year with production targeted for 2024. TSMC explained that it will use its 5-nanometer technology and produce 20,000 semiconductor wafer per month. The TSMC statement comes after the US government recently made it clear it wants to promote more tech self-sufficiency.
Microsoft to open first Italian data centre region in USD 1.5 bln cloud drive

(Telecompaper) Microsoft has followed recent moves by rivals Google and Amazon Web Services by announcing a major expansion of its cloud business in Italy. The company pledged to invest USD 1.5 billion to build a Milan-based data centre region, its first in the country, with a view to providing digital skilling and smart-working programmes, SME acceleration and sustainability programmes as well as access to AI Hubs under a five-year plan dubbed "Ambizione Italia: Digital Restart". It expects the new region to generate more than 10,000 job-related opportunities and some USD 9 billion in direct and indirect business impact by the end of 2024.
Pexip holds virtual roadshow for IPO to raise NOK 2.14 bln

(Telecompaper) Norwegian video-conferencing provider Pexip has announced a step towards becoming the first European company to complete an initial public offering (IPO) remotely, Reuters reported. Roadshows for the deal will run from 05 to 12 May, and timing may be extended until 19 May if necessary, the company said in a statement to the Oslo bourse.
Ericsson exploring sale of Iconectiv unit for USD 1.5-2 bln - report

(Telecompaper) Ericsson is looking to sell its US call routing unit Iconectiv, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. A sales advisor has been hired to help with the divestment, which has so far attracted a number of private equity firms. The unit is expected to bring in USD 1.5-2 billion.
Ooredoo Group revenue rises 1% to QAR 7.3 bln in Q1, customer base up 6%

(Telecompaper) Ooredoo Group said revenue for the first quarter ended 31 March increased by 1 percent to QAR 7.3 billion from QAR 7.19 billion in Q1 2019, supported by robust growth in Indonesia, Tunisia, Myanmar and other markets. That growth was partially offset by a Covid-19 impact, lower handset sales, and macroeconomic weakness in some of other markets. EBITDA declined by 5 percent year-on-year to QAR 3.02 billion from QAR 3.73 billion, hit by measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 in many territories as well as challenging market conditions in Algeria, Kuwait and Oman.
