FCC votes to further reduce phone calls for jail, prison inmates; companies balk

The Federal Communications Commission agreed Thursday to take additional steps to slash how much can be charged for phone calls made from jails and prisons. The 3-2 vote in Washington comes two years after the FCC voted to restrict rates on inmate calls made from one state to another.

Law-enforcement officials said seven victims of human trafficking are moving on with their lives after the two women who held them in captivity at three suburban massage parlors were sentenced last week. Sisters Estella Xu, 55, and Qing Xu, 58, each were sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday, Oct. 16, for forcing women to work and live at massage parlors in Powell, Worthington and west Columbus near Hilliard.

A Waxahachi, Texas, resident and former chief financial officer of Arrow Trucking Company was sentenced today to serve 35 months in prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and to defraud the United States, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General Caroline D. Ciraolo of the Justice Department's Tax Division and U.S. Attorney Danny C. Williams Sr. of the Northern District of Oklahoma. Jonathan Leland Moore, 38, pleaded guilty on Dec. 4, 2014, to an information charging him with one count of a dual-object conspiracy to defraud the United States and to commit bank fraud.
