Your Mission One of the main tasks of the DLR GfR mbH is to operate and manage the constellation of Galileo satellites from the Galileo Control Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. For the performance of tasks in the Galileo operation team of our Operations Department in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany we are looking for Space Segment Maintenance Engineers. This position focuses on spacecraft anomaly investigation, recovery strategies and workaround development. Archangel Lightworks is a startup specialised in space laser communications based in Harwell Space Campus, Oxfordshire. Founded in mid2017, we have secured longterm funding and successfully demonstrated several novel prototypes related to laser transmission and efficient perpendicular solar concentration. Our mission is to make 10x more data download possible to meet the demand from the growing satellites market, especially smallsats, delivering more data from the earth orbit to the ground at higher speed. Role Responsibilities We are passionate about innovation and driven to find new concepts for communications architectures. An opportunity to join this exciting team is available for an innovative, ambitious and experienced talent with a strong background in Optical Design Engineering and technical leadership to drive this forward and augment our rapidly growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for endtoend design of optical subsystems as well as simulation development of optical systems from concept all the way through to manufacture. Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to Integration and demonstration for a laser communication terminal. Ownership of design documentation for optical subsystems. Aiding in requirements and architecture definition including trade analysis. Working with AIT engineer to define and implement assembly and integration, and test procedures for optical subsystems Interested applicants may also consider starting first as a fixedterm consultant while rolling into a permanent role although this is less preferred. Required skills experience Experience designing and developing optical systems within the space industry, using Zemax with system optimisation Sequential, nonsequential desirable. Experience with optical calibration and alignment, and procedure definition. Optomechanical design and analysis for mass constrained systems. Integration of optical systems into products, payloads. Validation and verification of optical systems including testing. Understanding of key performance characteristics of laser, receiver for optical communication.Experience with requirements definition and tradeoff analysis for optical systems. Familiarityawareness of laser safety, regulations and clean room maintenance. Educated to degree level or equivalent in applied optics or Physics optics and 3 years related work experience. Positive attitude and, selfdriven and interested in working in a startup environment.Independent, quick learner, can structure and show initiatives to thoroughly evaluate and solve problems from different angles. Desirable additional skillsexperience Hands on lab experience working with IR lasers. Experience designing for manufacture. Strong focus on delivery. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting trade off analyses to inform payload design and optimisation for communication payload electronics in space and highaltitude environments. Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to Responsible for the design, development of a high data rate free optical communication detector and data management system for an airborne payload. Design, assembly of electrical and data subsystems for a nanosatellite laser communication terminal. Verify designs through simulation and laboratory to ensure they meet requirements, working with AIT lead. Design and manufacturing of test equipment, working closely with AIT lead. The successful candidate will be responsible for design, simulation, purchase and implementation of high reliability pointing acquisition and tracking system for a laser communication system. Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to Development of full control system architecture simulation to investigate tradeoffs and inform subsystem requirements. Characterise motion and disturbances of payload platform. This will include planning, execution, documentation of tests. Aiding in definition, implementation and conduction of test and verification plans for pointing of communication subsystem as well as control of airborne platform. The successful candidate will be responsible for analysing and assisting the design of mass constrained thermal management systems to maintain operation of electronics, optical systems in high altitude low temperature, low pressure and space environments. Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to Using simulation software and experimental testing you will perform thermal and structural analysis, aerodynamic flow analyses as appropriate to validate payload designs for space and highaltitude environments. Work closely with mechanical design engineer to ensure developed optical systems are thermally stableresilient.
