Google hit with EUR 1.5 bln fine by EU for AdSense search competition abuse

(Telecompaper) Google has received its third multi-billion-euro fine from the European Union for anti-competitive practices. The company was fined EUR 1.49 billion for abusing its dominance in the search intermediary market with its AdSense for Search product for advertising on third-party websites offering search engines. The Commission said restrictive clauses in the AdSense contracts prevented Google's rivals from placing their search adverts on these websites.

Google to offer Android users choice of browser, search engine after EU fine

(Telecompaper) Google plans to prompt Android users in Europe to choose a web browser and search engine for their phone, giving them an active choice in using an alternative to Google search and its chrome browser. The move follows a fine from EU competition authorities for Google abusing its dominant position in the search market by bundling its own apps with the Android system.

Google to launch Stadia online gaming platform later this year

(Telecompaper) Google announced at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco plans to launch its own online gaming platform. The Stadia service will take advantage of the company's global network of data centres and network capabilities to offer online access to streaming games from any device. In addition, Google is introducing the Stadia wireless controller, for playing games from any screen.

Google releases first beta of Android Q for Pixel users

(Telecompaper) Google has released the first beta of Android Q, the next version of the mobile operating system, for users of its Pixel smartphones. The company said Android Q brings a number of additional privacy and security features for users, as well as enhancements for foldables, new APIs for connectivity, new media codecs and camera capabilities, and faster app startup. A preview SDK is also available for developers. The company will release more details of the new OS at its developers conference Google I/O in May.
