Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description Software Operations Engineer in the Flight Software Systems Section, Software Systems Division, Systems Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality. The postholder will be assigned as integrated support in the function of Software and Operations Engineer reporting to the Spacecraft Engineering Manager of the Euclid Project within the Science Directorate. Euclid is the second medium size mission of the Cosmic Vision Science Programme of the Agency and is devoted to map the dark Universe through the combination of imaging and spectroscopic galaxy surveys. This includes responsibility for all onboard software for both platform and instruments, as well as the development of the ground segment software. Training and familiarisation with the parent Departments mandate, processes and procedures will be provided at the start of this assignment. Duties Specific responsibilities include Supervising the specification, design, procurement and development of all software onboard the spacecraft. Monitoring, in coordination with the Payload Mission Manager, the development of the instrument software to ensure adherence to programmatic commitments, quality and compatibility with the rest of the space segment. Coordination and supervision of the mission and science operations centres development, including early operations definitions. Monitoring, in coordination with the Payload Mission Manager, the development of the instrument consortum science ground segment to ensure adherence to programmatic commitments, quality and compatibility with the rest of the ground segment. Supervising the relevant procurements throughout their lifetime, with participation in relevant ITTs and reviews. Ensuring, in cooperation with the Euclid Project team, all onboard software compliance with technical and performance requirements and overall mission requirements. Monitoring the relevant procurements schedule and risks as well as the maintenance of the relevant uptodate technical budgets. Supporting the inorbit commissioning of subsystems under his responsibility. Participating in other Project and Project Department tasks benefitting from the postholders experience. Technology Participating in periodic meetings with the parent Division and contributing to the transfer of technical knowledge and lessons learned across the Agency. Contribute to the identification of relevant research topics in the field of competence for the parent Division Technical competencies A good understanding of modern software engineering methods and tools, RD trends and the industrial landscape Experience in realtime embedded software Knowledge of all phases of the software development lifecycle Knowledge of spacecraft systems and engineering processes Experience in the management and monitoring of industrial activities, including participation in reviews Experience of space engineering standards CFDP knowledge is an asset Behavioural competencies Communication Teamwork Problem Solving Results Orientation Planning Organisation Continuous Learning Education Applicants should have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in computer science andor electrical engineering. Additional requirements Extensive knowledge of modern software engineering and practical expeirence in spacecaft sofware engineering. Ability to manage several activities and keep system engineering control of the entire spacecraft software ecosystem Experience with space engineering standards including telecommand and telemetry services and their implementation, temwork skills, including contiruting to team efficiencyeffectiveness. Ideal candidate The candidate should have a PhD or MSc Engineering from a recognised Institution of Secondary studies or equivalent with minimum 4 years of relevant professional experience along with the following Minimum Requirements Experience on ESA Science Ground Segment software engineering processes, such as ECSSEST40C and ECSSQST80C standards Experience in software configuration control processes and tools Experience in software development under Linux Some scientific background would be an asset Experience in a complex software development acting as the technical lead The ability to act as a system architect for such a complex software development Extensive experience with Graphical User Interface GUI programming Experience with the Qt toolkit or any comparable C based GUI toolkits Knowledge of spacecraft systems engineering Experience in modelling and simulation of spacecraft systems Knowledge of mission planning concepts and processes An understanding of the interfaces between the SOC and MOC Extensive experience with objectoriented programming Recent experience in C for a minimum of at least 4 years Optional Requirements Experience in other programming languages, such as Java, C, Python Experience in data modelling and database design. Summary of the role The Data Flow Infrastructure group DFI within the Science Operations Software department SCS is responsible for developing and maintaining software components, which are critical for the endtoend operations of the ESO Observatories. Requirements The ideal consultant is a software engineer with a minimum of 3 years professional experience in software development.
