ASHRAE announces recipients of student competitions.

Heat was the focus of two ASHRAE competitions challenging students in their engineering skills. The 2015 Design Competition focused on a 3-story classroom and office building in Doha, Qatar. For the Applied Engineering Challenge, students were required to design a collapsible portable conditioned shelter for treatment of heat illness victims. Thirty-nine teams representing 10 countries entered the events. Projects will be shared at the 2016 ASHRAE Winter Conference, Jan 23-27.

Call for papers for the IAQ 2016 Conference, "Defining Indoor Air Quality: Policy, Standards and Best Practices," co-organized by ASHRAE and AIVC, has been extended until Nov 30, 2015. Scheduled for Sept 12–14, 2016, conference will focus on current and emerging definitions of indoor air quality and how they are – or could be – implemented in government policies and in standards for the design and operation of buildings and other indoor environments used worldwide.

ASHRAE Modeling Challenge highlights industry's creativity.

ASHRAE’s LowDown Showdown was featured at the Society’s "Energy Modeling Conference: Tools for Designing High Performance Buildings." Eight teams with 45 people participated in the modeling challenge and presented their models to conference attendees. Showdown challenged teams to model a net zero or better than net zero building. Four judging categories included: Best Energy Use Results, Best Innovative Workflow, Best Team Work, and Most Creative.

ASHRAE's "Cold-Climate Buildings Design Guide" provides information on issues commonly faced by designers in arctic and subarctic climates. In addition to cold-climate considerations in HVAC calculations and system design, book’s chapters cover sustainability, controls, building design, and commissioning. Book also includes appendix with 7 case studies of buildings located in cold and extreme cold climates. These buildings are leaders in their field with regard to efficiency and design.
