Cisco ordered to pay USD 1.9 bln to cybersecurity firm for infringing patents

(Telecompaper) Cisco has been ordered to pay USD 1.9 billion to Centripetal Networks for copying its cybersecurity patents, Reuters reported. A US district judge in Norfolk, Virginia made the ruling, saying Cisco was found to have infringed four patents belonging to Centripetal Networks, also based in Virginia. The judge did not find infringement of a fifth patent.

Google launches News Showcase with USD 1 billion pledge to publishers

(Telecompaper) Google has announced an initial USD 1 billion in payments to news publishers to produce content for Google News. The new scheme will start in Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, the UK and Australia with leading publications such as Der Spiegel, Stern, Die Zeit, Folha de S.Paulo, Band and Infobae. Google said it plans to expand the News Showcase to other countries soon, including India, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Kioxia postpones USD 16 bln IPO amid pandemic, Huawei woes

(Telecompaper) Kioxia, the Japanese memory-chip maker formerly known as Toshiba Memory, has postponed its initial public offering, originally planned for 6 October, citing continued market volatility and ongoing concerns about a second second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The company said it will "continue to evaluate the appropriate timing for its offering" and that it is not "in a rush" but reports said the delay may be indefinite. The Wall Street Journal reported that the decision comes amid US export restrictions on Huawei, affecting Kioxia's business.

Amazon introduces USD 6 a month cloud gaming service Luna

(Telecompaper) Amazon has unveiled a new cloud gaming platform called Luna, its rival to Microsoft's xCloud, Sony's PlayStation Now and Google's Stadia. The service takes the subscription model of Prime Video combined with the scale of Amazon Web Services, allowing subscribers to instantly play more than 100 Luna games on their favourite devices without lengthy downloads or updates, expensive hardware or complicated configuration. It will be available in the US from next month at an "introductory price" of USD 5.99 a month on Fire TV, PC, and Mac as well as on web apps for iPhone and iPad, with Android coming soon. Early access invites are already open.
