For our customer in Darmstadt we are looking for a Data Processing Service Engineer in order to assist in the data processing and software system engineering activities for the operational and future programmes within the Data Processing Systems and Applications Competence Area DPSA CA, including processing frameworks. The areas of work in the scope of the DPSA CA activities are the following The full engineering lifecycle of future Data Processing systems and applications for programmes under development. Maintenance of Data Processing SystemsApplications Requirements full lifecycle for Online Data Acceptance, Product Generation, Encoding and Delivery and Offline Analysis and Reporting systems, and including their Reprocessing equivalents as used for Climate Record generation Support Management of industrial contracts for the development or maintenance of Data Processing Systems and Applications Data Processing SystemsApplications interfaces engineering Generation of prototypes and development plans and where relevant their implementation Contribute to Integration, Verification and Validation Test campaigns Generation, maintenance and evolution of Data Processing SystemsApplications Maintenance Plans Contribute to the consolidation and evolution of processes, standards, methodologies, tools, elements, and facilities for data processing of science data for operational and future programmes Maintenance and evolutions of Data Processing SystemsApplications for existing and under evolutions programmes Provision of relevant inputs in area of responsibility to the midterm evolution planning MTEP for the evolution of operational systems and the implementation of the evolutions. Tasks and Responsibilities The typical tasks of the Data Processing Engineer will be Contribute to the definition, design, implementation and maintenance of architectures for data processing ground segments and their components with special emphasis on product quality control, calibration and validation, production monitoring and reporting. This task will mainly include Maintenance and evolutions of applications system in the area of the Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Multi Mission Element framework and in all its components Configuration Management, building and distribution of applications software releases and patches Contribution to applications software system design and reengineering in the area of the Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Multi Mission Element framework Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution. This will also include upgrade software, including implementing and maintaining new algorithms for product quality control and calibrationvalidation activities Perform routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control such as Contribute to the Configuration Management process and the building and distribution of software releases and patches Contribute to the development, integration and configuration management of software developed by third parties, its installation, and configuration and testing Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification. Follow up of the delivery of SW resolutions for these anomalies Perform standard SW engineering activities such as SW testing in a structured approach to verify that delivered SW is fulfilling the requirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected SW integration and verification in the ground segments Settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, Contribute to the procurement and installation of software, and the coordination with external providers of support services Participation in meetings and formal reviews. Skills and Experience Profile The following skills and experience are mandatory University degree in the relevant discipline engineering, physics, software or similar Relevant experience in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data processing systems considering the systems engineering aspects of data processing management and data provision experience of data processing for high data rate missions andor Earth Observation missions is an asset but is not mandatory Experience in SW design, SW development, Web applications programming, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of large complex realtime data processing systems for Earth Observation missions. Competence in objectoriented software design and implementation possibly in the context of satellite instrument data processing systems. Ability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. very good communication and presentation skills and be able to cope with very high workloads. Moreover heshe shall possess the following mandatory attitudes and attributes relevant for the development of hisher tasks Ability to learn and develop the needed skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of Data Processing applications within the Supporting Application Engineering Team. This includes the ability to rapidly absorb, and make use of, information presented in written and oral communications in a dynamic context The ability to maintain a system overview is essential. Heshe shall have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan their work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the following areas is mandatory CC programming language experience in a UNIXLINUX based environment Use of application programming of database systems e.g. ORACLE, INFORMIX, PostgreSQL and MySQL Competence in the use of scripting languages e.g. shell scripting, highlevel languages e.g. Python, Java and correspondent using of their libraries Knowledge of web technologies, programming and markup languages e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript, UML Knowledge of XML and related technologies XPATH, SVG, etc. Competence in the exploitation of modern hardware and operating systems at the application level e.g. parallel programming pthreads, MPI, OpenMP Familiarity with data formats used for meteorological satellite products Design and implementation of MMI using different toolkits and languages Desirable Skills and Experience Previous experience and knowledge in any of the following areas will be considered an additional asset Experience with the programming and usage of IDL and Fortran Experience in Web Programming Competence in SW testing, unit test suite maintenance, automated testing, verification and validation Experience in system design for quality control and calval systems Knowledge of relevant Standards, Quality Assurance and Configuration Management principles and applications Be able to work with a high degree of autonomy and to demonstrate good analytical skills. The working language for the position is English and therefore the person must be able to work effectively in this language. Can you apply your background and considerable experience in Meteorology or Remote Sensing to lead scientific developments for the rescue, recalibration and reprocessing of satellite observations to Level 1 products? EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment, pulling together the resources of 30 Member States. We observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces from Space using a system of satellites, 365 days a year, offering images and data to provide insights into weather situations, environmental hazards and climate change. Our work helps users worldwide to monitor changes in these to protect lives, lifestyles and properties. Developing the next generation of satellites, we look to shape our future. We are recruiting for a Product Expert to work within the Climate Services Division, and to focus on the processing of satellite data to Level 1. This person will lead specific scientific developments for the rescue and reprocessing of satellite observations and the validation of the resulting fundamental climate data records. Specific contributions for imaging and atmospheric sounding instruments operating in the infrared and microwave spectrum will include the development and application of quality control methods for metadata and raw data, the development and validation of instrument corrections and calibration methods plus the derivation of uncertainty examples for Level 1 products. To be successful in this role you will need to support the definition and maintenance of product requirements for EUMETSAT climate data records and the evolution of climate data records and related interactions with EUMETSATs network of Satellite Application Facilities SAFs. You should also be able to compile relevant reports and review scientific publications assessing their relevance for EUMETSAT. We would also expect you to lead specific scientific development for the establishment of fundamental climate data records for atmospheric sounders. The Climate Product Expert should be able to lead small teams of scientists, supporting their developments and reporting on progress, achievements, issues and plans. The role will involve interagency and team working across EUMETSAT and our network of SAFs so we are looking for someone with good interpersonal and communication skills. Alongside a university degree in Meteorology, Remote Sensing or equivalent you will need to demonstrate in depth knowledge and experience in the calibration of infrared andor microwave instruments flown on meteorological satellites or similar missions. You will also have experience in leading scientific development for instrument corrections, external calibration and validation of satellite products and the ability to undertake programming using CC andor Fortran 95 as well as scripting languages such as Perl, Python and Shell. Experience in the management of scientific projects and small teams would be an advantage. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.
