Telecom Egypt inks EGP 15 bln deals with Mobinil, Vodafone

2015-01-13 15:19:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Telecom Egypt has signed wholesale agreements with mobile carriers Mobinil and Vodafone that are expected to generate in total EGP 15 billion (USD 2 billion) in revenues over the life of the contracts. Both Mobinil and Vodafone Egypt's international services agreements are valid for four years, while Mobinil has agreed to use TE's infrastructure for five years and Vodafone for three years. The international services include access to TE's international gateway, which the operators have chosen rather than acquiring their own gateway licences. TE shares 35 percent of the revenue generated from communications over the gateway. For the infrastructure contracts, TE said its wholesale division will generate a minimum of EGP 3 billion in revenues over the duration of the contracts.

Vodafone CEO stresses 4G signal strength over speed

2015-01-12 14:40:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Vodafone UK does not see 4G as a race to have the highest speeds, but it's about having the strongest network, CEO Jeroen Hoencamp said in an interview on the operator's blog. "One of the things that makes us different from others is that we have our 'low band spectrum'. What that means is that our 4G is on a lower frequency, which travels further and deeper indoors. We could build a network just to achieve massive speeds," he says, "but the reality is that you don't currently need anything beyond 20Mbps on a mobile device. Even for streaming video you only need a couple of megabits per second." He explains that this is the thinking behind Vodafone UK's 4G entertainment packs, which come with a choice of Now TV Entertainment, Sky Sports Mobile TV or Spotify Premium. Vodafone's 4G network now covers half of the population, "but instead of just having 4G in the centre of a town and saying that the whole town has 4G, we don't say it's there until it's there. It's about us being able to prove that people are happy with it," Hoencamp says.
