Copernicus Sentinel3 Product Operations Expert Location Darmstadt, Germany. EUMETSAT is Europes meteorological satellite agency. Its role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather and climate from space 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This information is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisations Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide. EUMETSAT will also operate on behalf of the European Union Copernicus satellites and instruments Sentinel3, Sentinel4, Sentinel5 and Sentinel6 to provide data and support services to the Copernicus marine, atmospheric composition and climate change monitoring information services and to Copernicus users As an intergovernmental European Organisation, EUMETSAT has 30 Member States Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Duration of Initial Contract The initial contract will be of 4 years duration. The appointment may be extended, subject to programme requirements and individual performance. Subsequent contracts may have a maximum duration of 5 years at each review. Please note that appointment is subject to final confirmation of the Copernicus Delegation Agreement between EUMETSAT and the European Commission foreseen in 2014. Background Within the Technical and Scientific Support TSS Department, the post of the Copernicus Sentinel3 Product Operations Expert is located in the Marine Applications Team MATeam of the Remote Sensing and Products Division RSP that is responsible for the scientific development, maintenance, validation and routine monitoring of relevant remote sensing products in support of the development and operation of geostationary and polar orbiting systems. The post holder is responsible for the implementation, quality assessment and evaluation of operational Copernicus Sentinel3 marine products in relation with the Copernicus Marine Monitoring Service provider and the definition, implementation, and assessment of new or enhanced products based on innovative algorithms and software prototyping. The postholder will have a strong collaboration with external scientists in the field and the Copernicus Marine Monitoring Service providers Duties The main duties of the post are to Acquire and maintain an in depth understanding of the observational capabilities of the Copernicus Sentinel3 instruments for marine applications Support product commissioning for Copernicus Sentinel3 satellites Perform product monitoring and calibration and validation activities Provide product quality analysis and longterm monitoring of Copernicus Sentinel3 altimetry products in support of Sentinel3 operations Provide expert support to the User Help Desk and other user support services to the Copernicus users in hisher field of expertise Contribute to the detailed formulation of requirements for future Copernicus products and data services, responding to the evolving needs of the Copernicus Marine Monitoring Service and users Support the prototyping and operational implementation of advanced algorithms for new marine products from Sentinel3 and selected third party missions and commission of these products Play an active role in relevant operational and scientific interactions with the Copernicus Marine Monitoring Service and user communities Support reprocessing and recalibration activities asif required by the EC, e.g. to support the Copernicus climate service activites. Qualifications University degree in remote sensing or another relevant discipline Skills and Experience Proven experience in remote sensing and processing of data from relevant space borne instruments, preferably in an operational environment Proven experience in the development of operational scientific application software, with scientific development projects and working with user communities and researchers Strengths in analysis, synthesis and presentation, coupled with good interpersonal skills and a proven ability to apply these to the interactions within a team and between teams Scientific and operational knowledge of radar observations of the ocean, in particular altimetry Experience with products generated from EUMETSAT satellite data or similar data is an advantage. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have a working knowledge of French. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,180 per month net of internal tax which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
