Client and Location For one of our main customers, ESAESAC, we are currently looking for an Operations and Community Support Scientist for ESACs XMMNewton Mission. Tasks and Responsibilities This position will include the following specific tasks Contribute to instrument calibration or scientific performance monitoring within team activities. Development of new algorithms or shared scripts for scientific analysis. In addition to Operations Scientist 50 Optimisation to the observations of accepted proposals. Support to the Observing Time Allocation Committee OTAC The OTAC reviews all incoming observation proposals and determines which observations should be assigned observing time, this service may involve provision of support to the Project Scientist and the OTAC in this process. Participation on the activities related to the systematic processing of all scientific mission data as they become available. Provision of scientific requirements of the pipeline products following recommendations of the Project Scientist and Users Group through the PPS Scientist and coordination and participation on the quality control of the pipeline products. Participation in the production and regular updating of the XMMNewton source catalogues, in the definition of their content and scientific validation. Generation of conflict free and optimized science instrument operations plan, timelines and command sequences. Support the generation of procedures where relevant Target of Opportunity on call service Coordination of the release of Announcements of Opportunity for observing time, and provide support to the Project Scientist in the subsequent proposal peer review process by the Observing Time Allocation Committee. Support to the setup of calibration observations, including coordination with instrument teams or to engineering observations requested MOC. Interact with instrument teams, as requested in order to acquire and maintain instrumentspecific knowledge at the SOC. Provide second line support on helpdesk queries as requested. Participate in internal and external group meetings as requested, provide feedback to users and promote the mission at scientific conferences, e.g., by presentations. Community Support Scientist 50 Contribution to the SAS scientific validation and provision of occasional input to the SAS. Support to the Observing Time Allocation Committee OTAC. Support the scientific community via preparation and maintenance of up to date documentation, web contents, help desk service manned in working time and preparation of data analysis and scientific workshops. Supporting observersPIs in the optimization of their science programmes. Coordination of the release of Announcements of Opportunity for observing time, and support to the Project Scientist in the subsequent proposal peer review process by the Observing Time Allocation Committee and Optimisation to the observations of accepted proposals. Ensuring the scientific value of the pipeline and catalogue products is maintained and improved in agreement with the needs of the astronomical community, interfacing with the Project Scientist and Users GroupSWT. Support in organising and managing formal reviews, when needed, of scientific aspects of the mission. Maintain user support documentation, as requested. Support the Project Scientist in outreach activities on request, e.g., by providing information on details of observing schedules or other data. General Where it enhances the capability to support the user community, and only if other tasks permit, up to 20 of the work may involve original science research. Experience and education At least a Science PhD or Masters degree in related fields. At least 4 years of relevant experience High level of expertise in astronomical observations, preferably Xray astronomy, to understand the needs and requirements of the XMMNewton community for the planning and implementation of requested observations and to competently deal with community questions on these observations. Excellent command of commonly used generic analysis software, like IDL, or Python, and of Xray astronomical data analysis software in particular, with preference to the XMMNewton SAS, FTOOLs and XSPEC or similar, in order to competently interact with and support the community in their use of XMMNewton data. High level of understanding of the tasks in scientific operations support for an international space or ground based observatory. Knowledge of the specifics of astronomical Xray detectors, preferably those of XMMNewton. High level of ability to interact with and provide support to users from a worldwide community and crossing multiple disciplines. Fluency in written and spoken English.
