A Spanish leader company in Aerospace Engineering and Scientific services with more than 45 years of experience working for NASA and 35 years working for ESA seeks a candidate for a Sciences Operation Engineer. This work package is intended to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA in developing science operations systems and tools, including System engineering and architectural design activities, including operating plans and procedures, Designing, developing, implementing, testing, deploying, operating and maintaining software tools and systems, e.g. o Observation proposal handling, mission planning and quicklook systems, parts of which may be distributed to the community o User support tools o Interactive analysis and calibration systems, to be distributed as needed to the community for data reduction and analysis o Data processing pipelines o Scientific data archives and interfacing these to the virtual observatory. o Scientific and technical WWW systems to support Science Operations Centre, Science Ground Segment and the scientific community Contribute to the definition of Interface Control Documents ICDs and file interchange formats with external coordination units Organise and perform end to end system testing with the scientific communities Contribute to the maintenance of the overall system, including configuration control and versioning The Solar Orbiter Science Ground Segment This work package is intended to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA in developing the Solar Orbiter missions Science Operations Centre at ESAC. Solar Orbiter is the first of the medium size missions in the ESAs Cosmic Vision Science Programme, developed in collaboration with NASA. It is a solar observatory carrying ten instruments provided by Principal Investigators six remote sensing instruments an EUV telescope, a polarimetric telescope, an Xray telescope, a coronagraph, an heliospheric imager, and a spectrometer and four insitu instruments magnetometer, radio and plasma waves, energetic particle detector and a solar wind analyser. The primary goal of the mission is to operate the whole payload in a coordinated way to address some of the outstanding scientific questions on the relationship between the Sun and the heliosphere. The spacecraft is expected to be launched in July 2017, and after a three month commissioning phase it will cruise for three and a half years until the proper orbital geometry is achieved. The nominal mission is expected to last three and half years more with a post operations phase of two additional years. The Solar Orbiter Science Operations Centre at ESAC is responsible for the development of the Science Ground Segment SGS following the Science Implementation Requirements provided by the Project Scientist which covers all the operational activities originating from the mission science objectives defined by the Science Working Team SWT, including interactions with the Instrument Teams and the Mission Operations Centre at ESOC. Operational activities for Solar Orbiter cover coordination of science operations for the cruise and nominal phases of the mission, generation of specific quick turnaround low latency data products, production of auxiliary data to support operations, as well as the archiving of PI provided science data products. This work package covers software design, definition, implementation and maintenance service support to Solar Orbiter Science Ground Segment development, operations and maintenance at ESAC, including the science operations planning system, the lowlatency data generation and visualization system, the auxiliary data products generation system and also supports the archiving of science data products. Specific Service tasks Coordination and monitoring of all data handling and archiving activities during the prelaunch preparation phase, including support to the development of the low latency data processing pipelines and auxiliary data products. Definition of the science data generation, validation and archiving plan. Definition of archiving guidelines. Support to the Instrument Teams on science data product definition. Support the detailed specification of the science data contents and structure requirements. Support the definition and implementation, including validation, of the SOC archiving subsystem, including the mirroring interface with NASA. Tracking deliveries of science data products according to agreed schedule. Validation of all data deliverables from the Instrument Teams and SOC team. Ingestion of all data deliverables into the Solar Orbiter mission archive. Verification of the completeness, integrity and accessibility of all data ingested into the archive. Support to endusers. Output and Service Performance Monitoring ESA will formally define the service delivery in terms of delivery times, performance targets and similar measurable parameters Key Performance Indicators. This shall be agreed with the service provider and shall be assessed, and modified as needed, during regular progress meetings typically monthly. The service provider shall manage the service provision and provide ESA with the necessary data and corresponding evidence. The service provider shall be measured and assessed on the basis of Archiving guidelines and plan documents. Data handling and archiving activities reports. System requirements documents. System test specifications and validation reports. Science data validation and ingestion reports. Interactions Free interaction is expected with the members of the Solar Orbiter Science Operations Working Group SOWG, its Data Analysis Working Group DAWG splinter, and with software engineers in the Instrument teams. Frequent interactions are expected to take place with the SOC manager, the SOC team members and within the team of other service providers working on Solar Orbiter. Also, frequent interactions are expected to take place with the Computers Support Group and the Science Archives Team at ESAC. Specific Qualification Requirements The service to be provided requires that the personnel should possess a university background in a scientific or technical subject and relevant professional experience of at least 5 years in planetary science data handling and archiving. Reflecting the scientific aspects of the service to bne provided , a research level qualification PhD or equivalent would be a distinct advantage. In particular, the following experience is required for the service provider personnel Experience in data handling and archiving in the solar physics or heliospheric disciplines. Experience with the ESAC archives. Scientific experience in solar physics or heliospheric physics. Experience with solar system geometry and ancillary information tools SPICE. Experience with software programming and scripting languages IDL, Python,, etc.. Experience with XMLbased documents. Other Information It is expected that the service is provided predominantly onsite at ESAC with the possibility of offsite Support periods to be agreed between ESA and the service provider.
