The Position This is an opportunity to contribute your expertise to currently operated or future Earth Observation missions in close collaboration with our institutional clients in the space sector! We are seeking software engineers specializing in data processing of remote sensing instruments to join our team for Payload Operation Systems. This role will work on the development, improvement and maintenance of data processing chains of major Earth Observation mission, including all aspects relating to product generation and quality monitoring calibration, verification and validation. The area of application may range from software prototyping up to maintenance of operational processors. Are you an ambitious postdoctoral scientist with strong numerical skills and experienced in atmospheric remote sensing and data processing? Then you are the person we are looking for. You and SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research With your work at SRON, you will analyze the performance of the innovative instrument payload of the European CO2 Monitoring CO2M mission in perspective of its overall science objectives. CO2M is one of the most challenging European missions for atmospheric remote sensing, comprising the launch of three satellites in the years 20252026 by the European Space Agency ESA. SRON has a leading role in advising ESA regarding the scientific targets of the mission and develops operational data processing algorithms of CO2M for the European operational satellite agency EUMETSAT. Your position and team You will be part of our team of 8 scientists working on trace gas retrieval in the Earth Science Group ESG of SRON. The ESG consists of approximately 25 scientists permanent, postdocs, PhD students that work on the data processing and interpretation of satellite instruments as well as the definition of new instrumentation and guiding the development. Our team develops algorithms for trace gas remote sensing, for operational data processing and validation and gives scientific guidance during the implementation phase of future missions. Your project You will contribute to the endtoend performance analysis of the CO2M spectrometer and polarimeter instrument. For this purpose, we will simulate radiometric calibrated measurements of the CO2M spectrometer and polarimeter with global and regional data coverage. Performing CO2 accuracy and precision analysis on these data sets will give us inside in the expected mission performance. You will present your results to the project team, our colleges at the agencies and at conferences and in peerreviewed journals. Position requirements We are looking for a person with a PhD in atmospheric physics or similar. Furthermore, a clear asset will be strong programming skills in Python, C and Fortran and experience in atmospheric trace gas and aerosol remote sensing. Thorn SDS is part of the incumbent System Operations Engineering team based onsite at EUMETSAT providing services focussed on real time endtoend mission operations and the systems required to support them, including communications networks, operational infrastructure, operation security training and interfacing with Flight Operations. The services support the routine operational phases of EUMETSAT MSG and EPS systems, Copernicus systems as well as to support the preparation of future missions including MTG. We are bidding to retain these services and part of our solution enables us to showcase 1 or 2 high quality new candidates that we will propose join our team, on or around June 2022, to address the expanding client requirements. The role will develop with different missions so we are looking for engineers who can demonstrate initiative and flexibility in a fastpaced environment, perhaps already familiar with the EUMETSAT or ESA environment. Many of the systems operate with UNIXLinux operating systems so knowledge of this in an operational environment is a core requirement. You should be systematic in your approach to work, able to plan and cope with tight schedules you should be able to communicate articulately in English and be able to write accurate, concise, focussed and consistent technical documentation.
