Post Internal Research Fellow PostDoc in Emerging Technologies and Earth Observation This post is classified F2 on the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. Location ESRIN, Frascati, Italy Our Team and Mission The lab exists to accelerate the future of earth observation, by helping Europes earth observation and space ecosystem adopt disruptive technologies and methods. Right now, were working with AI, cubesat, drone and hyperspectral payload data and VR, but HAPs, quantum technologies and distributed ledgers are on our todo list. lab is part of the ESA Earth Observation Programmes Department developing future systems for earth observation. lab also hosts ESAs InCubed programme, providing rapid funding of innovative public private partnerships to exploit new EO markets. lab also convenes experts from across the World to develop research agendas on the relevance for EO of emerging technology topics including AI, distributed ledgers and quantum computing. lab tests concepts in 13 month Case Studies executed by a multidisciplinary research team that youd be a part of. Successful ideas are scaled up through partnerships with ESA staff, external researchers and university institutes, new space companies in every ESA member state, and disseminated through scientific publications and conferences and scale up projects. The lab research team will grow to 1520 staff in 2019, including this intake of research fellows and secondees from industry and visiting fellows. The research team is supported by a team of engineers and the labs leadership team. lab gets Case Study requests from across ESAs Earth Observation Programme and industry, and in we expect proposals from InCubed bidders, new space companies, university partners and ESAs Business Incubation Centres. Interested candidates are highly encouraged to visit the ESA website www.esa.int Fields of research and activities As a research fellow you will Propose and make the case for your own research case studies Help deliver case studies proposed by others using an agile sprint based approach over periods up to 3 months Help prioritize proposals, in collaboration with Earth Observation Program leadership and ideally collaborating with industry. Link your work to existing activity in the Earth Observation Programme, including in science, future systems, ground segments and applications, so helps them adopt new disruptive approaches. Work with partners from academia and industry to help deliver research case studies, through external projects commissioned from them to accelerate your work. By the time you leave lab, youll have worked on 68 case studies, coauthored papers on these, had substantial experience of agile RD, had seminars with or worked with 50100 World experts on our core topics, attended 13 international conferences or events, and worked directly with leaders from across ESA and Europes New Space companies. Your research will apply artificial intelligence to earth observation and geospatial data, and may involve one of more of the following topics Small Sat mission concepts, High Altitude Platforms, miniaturised sensors Convergence of IoT and observational data, hyperspectral data, ultrahigh resolution data Distributed ledgers and quantum computing applications to earth observation. For our customer in Darmstadt we are looking for a System Engineer in Data Processing to support current and future Earth observation missions, in particular the Sentinel6 JasonCS Mission Our customer EUMETSAT is an independent intergovernmental organisation founded in 1986 to establish maintain and exploit European systems of operational meteorological satellites and to contribute to the operational monitoring of the climate and the detection of global climate changes. A further objective of EUMETSAT is to provide data, products and support services to the European Copernicus information services and user communities, with a focus on marine, atmosphere and climate. EUMETSAT is governed by a Council representing 30 Member States and 1 Cooperating State. The candidate shall provide engineering services to the Jason CS Ground Segment Data processing team as well as to the Operations department in the frame of maintenance and evolution of the current operational data processing systems. In addition the candidate shall support activities related to phases CD of the Jason CS Programme in the area of data processing engineering The candidate would be part of the Data Processing Systems and Applications Group, composed of approximately 35 people, which is responsible for providing support to The full engineering lifecycle of future data processing systems and applications for programmes under development Maintenance and evolution of data processing systems and applications for existing programmes System engineering of Level 0 data reception and decommutation System engineering of Level 1 and Level 2 processing as regards interfaces, processing frameworks and infrastructure, SW releases preparation Maintenance and evolution of Data Quality Control QC, CalVal and Reprocessing facilities. Review of documentation dealing with technical evolutions of the infrastructure Profile Mandatory Attributes, Skills and Experience In addition to having a University degree in the engineering, physics, or software or similar domains the key persons shall have the following mandatory attributes, skills, and experience experience in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data processing systems for Earth Observation missions experience on data processing for high data rates missions will be considered an asset. Relevant experience with L0L1L2 processing software for Earth Observation missions, either for operationsmaintenance or specification and development. Knowledge of the requirements engineering process, including relation between requirements, ICDs, design and testing documentation. Ability to learn and develop the needed skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of future earth observation missions. This includes the ability to rapidly absorb, and make use of, information presented in written and oral communications in a dynamic context. Willingness to work within a multidisciplinary context in cooperation with other teams. The ability to maintain a system overview is essential. The key persons shall have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan their work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. The key persons shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. The working language for the position is English and therefore the person must be able to work effectively in this language.
