(Telecompaper) The Italian government said EUR 2.2 billion of public funds are now available to begin work on the country's EUR 12 billion broadband expansion plan. The Italian state and EU structural funds will provide a total of EUR 7 billion and operators are expected to provide the rest of the money. The Ministry of Economic Development said the first tenders for the funding will start in the autumn. The plan will prioritize rural zones that contain 35 percent of the population but which are unable to attract private investment.
Telecom Italia net profit down sharply in H1 to EUR 29 mln
2015-08-07 08:40:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia reported a sharp fall in first-half net profit, to EUR 29 million from EUR 543 million a year earlier. The company was hurt by a range of one-time charges for restructuring, legal settlements and financial transactions. Telecom Italia said that without these one-times, profit would have reached EUR 650 million. The group's revenues were also down 4.3 percent from a year earlier to EUR 10.097 billion, with a 2.1 percent fall in Italy and 10.7 percent drop in Brazil. On an organic basis, excluding currency effects and changes in scope, revenues fell 3.3 percent. EBITDA dropped to EUR 3.633 billion from EUR 4.345 billion a year ago, and the margin fell to 36.0 percent from 41.2. Excluding the EUR 399 million in one-time charges, EBITDA was down just 5.0 percent, with a margin at 39.9 percent. Operating cash flow declined to EUR 701 million from EUR 1.044 billion, hurt by the cost of renewing the GSM licence in Italy and investments in new services. Adjusted net financial debt reached EUR 26.992 billion at the end of June, up by EUR 341 million from the end of 2014, as income from the Inwit IPO and towers sales was offset by higher costs for real estate and towers leases.

Nokia sells Here to carmakers for EUR 2.8 bln
2015-08-03 08:26:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Nokia has reached an agreement to sell its digital mapping and location services business Here to a consortium of carmarkers for an enterprise value of EUR 2.8 billion. Audi, BMW and Daimler will pay a net price of just over EUR 2.5 billion, after compensation for certain liabilities at Here, Nokia said. The sale is expected to close in the first quarter of 2016. Nokia first announced plans to sell Here in April, when it agreed the merger with Alcatel-Lucent. After selling Here and its mobile phone business last year, Nokia will focus exclusively on the network equipment market, as well as its licensing business. Here already serves much of the world's automakers with mapping services, as well as supplying many mobile phone operating systems, including Windows, Android and iOS. The company generated an adjusted operating profit of EUR 46 million on revenues of EUR 552 million in the first half of this year. It recorded an operating loss of EUR 1.241 billion in the period, after an impairment of EUR 1.209 billion to write off goodwill.
