Italian cabinet approves EUR 6 bln national broadband plan

2015-03-04 09:35:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The cabinet of Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi has approved the EUR 6 billion plan to accelerate the development of a national high-speed fibre network after a period of consultation with operators. Under the terms of the Strategy for Italian Broadband and Digital Growth 2014-20, operators will be offered a series of incentives to invest in upgrading their networks, above all in the south of the country, which will receive the bulk of the Italian and European structural and development funds. The aim is to go beyond the objectives of the digital agenda for Europe and bring high-speed broadband of 100 Mbps to 85 percent of Italy's population by 2020, rather than the European goal of 50 percent, as well as 30 Mbps broadband to all Italians. According to Italian communications regulator AgCom, less than 1 percent of Italians currently access the internet at speeds of 30 Mbps, compared to an EU average of 21 percent. The government said tenders to build the networks will be awarded on the basis of how fast the work can be carried out rather than the cost. Presenting the plan, state secretary to the prime minister's office Graziano Delrio denied recent reports that Telecom Italia would be forced to switch off its copper network and convert to fibre.

(Telecompaper) Spanish infrastructure company Abertis has announced the acquisition of 90 percent of the shares of the mobile tower unit of Italian operator Wind for EUR 693 million. The Italian subsidiary of Russia's Vimpelcom will retain a ten percent stake in Galata, the unit it set up last month consisting of 7,377 towers plus employees and related contracts. Wind confirmed that the transaction is expected to close within the first quarter of 2015, and that proceeds from the sale will used by the operator to further reduce its debts. In addition, Wind will enter into a 15-year tower services agreement with Galata for the provision of a broad range of services on the mobile tower sites as well as on sites subsequently built by Galata hosting Wind equipment. Abertis outbid rival offers from Mediaset-controlled EI Towers, Italian investment fund F2i and American Tower to secure Wind's tower asset.

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia has unveiled the details of a three-year business plan for 2015-2017 that envisages total investments of around EUR 10 billion in Italy and over EUR 4 billion in Brazil. The investment earmarked for the operator's domestic market includes around EUR 5 billion for what it describes as innovative developments (NGN, LTE, cloud computing, data centres, transformation activities and TI Sparkle, the company's international operator).
