Although Thanksgiving (aka Turkey Day) has passed, the birds are making the headlines this week. Eric Swafford, Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) staffer, recently penned an article that appeared in the Shreveport Times. Entitled Give Thanks For Compassionate Family Farmers This Season, Swafford relies on his childhood upbringing on a small Tennessee cattle operation to describe the idyllic family farm, complete with cows grazing on green grass in rolling pastures. BEEF Publishes Latest Survey Of Radio-Frequency ID Suppliers

The recession might be affecting some businesses, but the radio-frequency ID (RFID) industry apparently isn’t among them. According to a new RFID sector survey by IDTechEx Research, the RFID market will increase from $6.98 billion in 2012 to $7.88 billion this year, and is expected to be triple that by 2020. read more

Wholesale Beef Value Adds Spark to Fed Cattle Prices

Calves and yearlings traded near steady in a holiday-shortened week that was also disrupted by winter weather. Week-to-week, Feeder Cattle futures closed an average of $2.11 higher except for $1.40 and 65 higher at the back of the board. Week-to-week, Choice wholesale boxed beef cutout value increased 3.96/cwt. Select was up $3.59. Cash fed cattle sales were $2-$3 higher at $132-$134/cwt. Dressed sales were $2-$3 higher at $209-$210/cwt. read more
