As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. The expertise group Instrument Science has a vacancy for an Optical Instrument scientist fm Vac. nr. 1257 You will be part of the Instrument Science Group where optical experts contribute to space instruments ranging from Earth Observation and Exoplanet characterization in the visible and near infrared wavelength bands, to cryogenically cooled instruments for Astrophysics in the far infrared. Project Within the climate and air quality program of SRON, you will work on the development of novel optical instrumentation for Earth Observation. Your responsibility will be in performance analysis of space spectrometers and polarimeters. Furthermore, you will develop test setups and perform the calibration onground and inorbit of these optical instruments. You will work in a diverse team together with space industry and knowledge institute team members. SRON projects are carried out in Dutch national context in collaboration with international space industry and agencies. Tasks The candidate will perform the following tasks As part of a system engineering team, contribute as performance specialist to the development of advanced optical payloads Act as calibration scientist in flight hardware projects Emphasis on design, development and analysis of instrument calibration Analyze optical performance test results Present results in documents, scientific articles and presentations. Contribute to the development of new concepts for next generation optical payloads Candidate shall show the potential and ambition to grow into the position of Lead Instrument ScientistSystem Engineer, overseeing multiple disciplines and act as the technical responsible lead Profile The candidate shall have an excellent track record meeting most of the following requirements Ph D. in a discipline related to instrumentation e.g. Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Astronomy Handson experience with development of optical instrumentation or performing optical experiments Handson experience with detector arrays in the visual andor infrared wavelength ranges covering the complete signal chain Strong programming skills, preferably in Python andor C Experience with analysis of the performance of an optical instrument or setup Experience with System Engineering or proven ability to work systematically having an overview beyond the boundaries of your own discipline Wellstructured and goal oriented approach training in project management skills is beneficial. Location ECSAT, Harwell, United Kingdom Description Cryosphere Scientist in the ESA Climate Office of the Eatrh Observation Science, Applications and Climate Department. Duties The main responsibilities of the post are to expand the awareness, utilisation and scientific impact of EO data for climate research and applications, in particular for the cryosphere but also for other domains of the Earth system. The tasks include conducting scientific data exploitation activities and research studies to address gaps in knowledge as part of the contribution of European Earth Observation science to future IPCC assessments and reports, supporting and informing the implementation of global policy decisions taken at COP21 in Paris, December 2015. In carrying out these taks, the postholder shall provide support to and advise on the detailed scientific goals of the various international scientific and operational user communities concerned with international climate research, modelling, adaptation and mitigation activities. Responsibilities include the following duties Establishing a dialogue with specialised cryosphere user communities, analysing their needs for satellitebased observations of the climate system, and assessing their feedback on available EObased information Deriving technical specifications for Fundamental Climate Data Records and Essential Climate Variables related to the cryosphere, chiefly from ESA EO Missions, with specific regard to longterm stability, consistency, completeness, availability, errorcharacterisation, reducing uncertainties, and compatibility with climate observations from other Space and non space sources Setting up and managing industrial contracts RD projects and other EO exploitation activities to respond to the needs for EObased information of climate research and climate services, including for reanalysis, modelling, attribution, projection, prediction, trends assessment, and data assimilation Ensuring the results of such developments are tested and verified with the corresponding climate user communities Cooperating with internal and external partner organisations to transfer capabilities developed under a research and demonstration context into an operational framework Maintaining links and ensuring coherence with relevant activities of Member States and international partner organisations Contributing to the Agencys public communications on EO Supporting the work of Young Graduate Trainees and Research Fellows.
