LG to offer Hi-Fi music service for premium smartphone users

(Telecompaper) LG Electronics will offer a high-fidelity (Hi-Fi) music service for customers of its premium smartphones. Starting this month, the new music service will be introduced via the LG SmartWorld app on certain LG phones and at the lgworld website in nearly 70 countries, including the US, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Italy, Russia and the UK.

Asus grows smartphone shipments to 5 mln in Q2

(Telecompaper) Asus reported second-quarter sales of TWD 99.37 billion, up 4 percent from a year earlier but 3 percent versus Q1. Operating profit rose 7 percent year-on-year to TWD 4.72 billion, while net profit was down 3 percent from a year ago to TWD 4.66 billion. Asus shipped a total 4.8 million computers in the quarter, down from 5.4 million in Q1, while mobile device shipments increased over the same period to 6.0 million units from 4.5 million. The mobile growth came mainly from smartphones, which increased to 5.0 million units from 3.0 million in Q1. Computers still accounted for 61 percent of revenue, and mobile devices were good for 22 percent; Asus aims to reverse this and generate a majority of sales from mobile by 2018. For the third quarter, Asus targets growth in both product categories, to 5.4 million computers and 7.8 million mobile devices.

LG launches Wine Smart flip smartphone

(Telecompaper) LG Electronics is introducing a new flip phone. First launched as the LG Gentle in Korea, the phone is coming to the rest of the world as the LG Wine Smart, reflecting its burgundy colour. The clamshell phone will make its international debut later this month in target countries including France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Kazakhstan, Japan and the UK. LG said the Wine Smart combines the familiarity of a folder phone with an easy-to-use touchscreen and the connectivity and power of a smartphone. The phone is powered Android 5.1.1 and includes a physical 3x4 numeric keypad for typing and hotkeys that provide access to frequently used features, such as phone dialer, address book, text messages or camera. The 3x3 home screen features larger-than-normal app icons. The Wine Smart also includes LG's Safety Care feature to send emergency alerts and real-time location to pre-selected contacts whenever the user needs immediate assistance. Other specifications include a 3.2-inch HVGA display (480x320), 1.1GHz quad-core processor, 4GB storage plus a memory card slot, 1GB RAM, rear 3MP camera, front VGA camera, LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 1,700 mAh removable battery.
