Qualcomm unveils first 5G smartphone processor, first devices expected in H1 2019

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has unveiled its first processor for 5G smartphones, the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform. In addition to multi-gigabit broadband speeds with the 5G modem, the device upgrades again the on-device AI, extended reality and camera opportunities and supports new features such as advanced gaming and in-display fingerprint readers. Samsung said it will use the platform to launch its firs 5G devices in the first half of 2019.

Verizon, Samsung to bring 5G smartphone to US in H1

(Telecompaper) Verizon and Samsung have announced plans to bring out a commercial 5G smartphones to market in the first half of next year. The companies will unveil a proof of concept at the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit, set to take place in Maui this week. The device will be powered by the upcoming flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver, RF front-end and antenna elements.

TIM connects first prototype 5G smartphone to Italian network

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia (TIM) has teamed up with Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies to conduct the first live trial of its network using a 5G prototype smartphone. The pilot was conducted at TIM's Turin lab, with the operator claiming the first use in Italy of a smartphone equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G chipset, set to be included in 5G-compatible handsets to be launched next year. The OTA (Over the Air) connection trials also used Ericsson equipment compliant with the 3GPP 5G NR (New Radio) Release 15 specifications as well as Massive MIMO technology.

Verizon shows first 5G mobile data with Moto Z3 smartphone

(Telecompaper) Verizon said it completed the world's first 5G data transmission on a smartphone on a commercial 5G New Radio network. The successful test was completed with a Moto Z3 paired with a 5G moto mod in Providence, Rhode Island, in cooperation with Motorola, Samsung and Qualcomm. The smartphone is already for sale at Verizon, and customers can upgrade it to 5G with the clip-on modem when Verizon's 5G mobile commercial service begins in 2019.
