Report: Salesforce.com joining OpenStack

Salesforce.com, the preeminent SaaS (software as a service) company, is reportedly joining the open source OpenStack project. The Wall Street Journal quotes Graham Weston, co-founder and chairman of Rackspace, which is one of the original OpenStack companies, to report the news. The move would be a major endorsement of the open source platform by yet another major technology company. Salesforce.com would join the ranks of Cisco, IBM, Intel, Red Hat, Dell, HP and dozens of others who have thrown support behind the open source infrastructure as a service (IaaS) project.

CouchDB creator joins Salesforce.com to work on 'ridiculously cool' infrastructure project

Salesforce.com Drops $1M to Make Hackathon Results Fair

Salesforce.com has taken an interesting step in stemming the fallout from its recent hackathon by deciding to award a second prize of $1 million to another team of developers. At the Dreamforce software conference last month, Salesforce.com held a Salesforce1 Hackathon, in which more than 4,500 developers were encouraged to build apps using the company's customer relationship management platform.

Salesforce.com has come under fire from critics who say the "hackathon" it held at last week's Dreamforce conference was judged unfairly, and CEO Marc Benioff is now promising a thorough investigation. "We are doing a full review of the Hackathon," Benioff said in a Twitter message. "We always respond to feedback, and this will be no different. It must be a legitimate victory."
