Executives from Switch did not have Michigan on their radar for a new data center until Roger Norman, the owner of the former Steelcase pyramid, mentioned his recent acquisition in a conversation with Rob Roy, the CEO and founder of the Nevada data center giant. That offhand comment led to a visit to Grand Rapids during ArtPrize nine weeks ago, Adam Kramer, senior vice president of strategy for Switch, said in a telephone interview with MLive and the Grand Rapids Press on Monday, Nov. 30. "We fell in love with Michigan," said Kramer, who said they were unprepared for Grand Rapids' vibrant downtown and quality of life.

After State Rep. Ken Yonker met with executives from Switch, a Nevada company that wants to create a world-class data center in the former Steelcase pyramid, the Caledonia Republican shook their hands and declared it a "done deal." That claim will be challenged next week when Yonker's colleagues take up enabling legislation to exempt Switch and other data centers from sales taxes, use taxes and property taxes.
