Description POST Earth Observation Application Support Engineer in the ESA Climate Office, Science, Applications and Future Technologies Department, Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. The postholder will report to the Head of the ESA Climate Office and will be leading the management of activities related to climate datainformation quality assurance in relation to the climate data products, standards, algorithm validation and long term preservation. Other responsibilities include The definition of the CCI Data Access needs, both FCDRs and ECVs, in terms of Services Coordinated Interface, CoreInfrastructure, Analysis and Reporting, and Quality Control. The analysis, definition, initiation and management of industrial activities, associated to the Distribution of the Earth Observation data from the GMECV programme and the Climate Scientific User Community. Acquire, archive, document and make available in CMIP5 CCI products. This includes maintaining both the standards and protocols, filenaming conventions, data formats etc already agreed between the CCI teams and the development of CFsatellite conventions. Definition and development of the CCI Data Portal, a dedicated web portal setup to provide a single point of access for all CCI data products. Definition and development of the CCI Tool Box, incorporating generic functions applicable to all ECV data products will be implemented, in order to simplify analysis of multiple ECVs in parallel. Support the development of climate services, especially international and intergovernmental public sector markets, including climate data visualisation. Profile Applicants should have a university degree or equivalent qualification in physics, engineering or a relevant Earth sciences discipline. This post requires extensive professional experience on product definition, calibration, validation, algorithm development, quality assessment and exploitation of Earth Observation data, particularly ESA missions an established profile of dialoguing the with EO research communities in disciplines relevant for climate. Applicants should be strongly selfmotivated, resultsoriented, possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to work effectively within ESA teams and in international cooperation. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required. Knowledge of another member state language is an asset. It is not part of EUMETSATs operational infrastructure but it uses hardware and software that are similar also to the ones used in the different EUMETSAT ground segments. It also provides essential service functions in support to EUMETSAT operations like the collection and storage of statistical data. Currently it consists of about 15 UNIX servers, 250 TB of online disk storage, an independent network and integrated backup services. There are some 250 users of the system which are accessing the servers and the disk storage from their offices via Linux Workstations that are used in parallel to the office computer infrastructure. It offers a wide range of operating systems, compilers, linkers, data analysis software and other tools that are needed for software development, data analysis and data storage. It also hosts the development environment for most of the operational ground segments. The system is undergoing constant upgrade. Currently the system is converted into a local Cloud providing most of the services by virtual services and other virtual resources. As a member of the Computer Systems Management CSM team, the Key person shall provide support to the development and maintenance of the TCE. The duties range from maintaining and creating software packages that are installed on the TCE over advice and support for programmers working with the TCE to the creation of new software that is needed to support ongoing developments. This also includes the settingup and implementation of best practices for programming and the definition of the future TCE design in close cooperation with the TCE system administrators The Key person shall perform the following tasks Maintenance and development of bespoke and COTS software packages Support of programmers in the area of system programming and interface definition Design and implementation of new software packages that are needed to support ongoing projects and which are providing common services to all users. Contribution to the analysis and planning of HW and SW upgrades or reconfigurations, taking care of compatibility issues between subsystems provision of secondlevel support to the users of the system Database Programming support to SW development and maintenance in relation to the utilization of system resources provision of standbyoncall support if needed under special circumstances provision of support, as required, to critical operations. In the performance of the activities the Key person shall apply the relevant change control and maintenance procedures. PROFILE In addition to having a university degree or equivalent, the Key person shall have extensive experience in the programming of lowlevel code and system critical functions of distributed systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterized by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements. The Key person shall have an expert knowledge and a significant work experience of programming with UNIXtype operating systems, and should be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with as many as possible of the following system software environments CC programming Java Programming Scripting language programming like perl or python Network programming Operating System interface programming Automated services Database programming Experience in the installation, administration and troubleshooting on some of the following shall be considered as an advantage Installation and maintenance of ORACLE databases maintenance of an Online Documentation system FirstSecond Level user support. Automatic Service Provisioning using Cloud technologies. Installation and maintenance of programming and debugging environments It is also an advantage if the key person can carry out basic hardware support like installing interface cards or physically setting up networks. The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. Because of the special support role good communications skills and stress resistance are essential for the job. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the key person must be able to work effectively in this language and have a knowledge of the other.
